Hey everyone,
Does anyone know of collars that don't discolor the white under the neck of their corgi (or in my case, my corgi mix)? I don't remember my previous dogs ever having a problem with this. Is it just the cheap collar we got her from PetSmart?

What kind of material is it? if it is a metal one, the enamel may be worn out. If it is a nylon one, you may want to wash it in cold water to get the color out first, do not mix it with your clothes :)
maybe its from the tags?
The collar is pink nylon, but I'm guessing it's from the tags or the metal loop that the tags attach to.
TIP: have your cell phone # on the collar! We helped reunite 2 dogs who'd run off with their owners once. We were in the backcountry and happened to have a cell phone.

I made a modified Martingale collar to save weight (think of how much weight we're asking these guys to lug around all their lives). No chain; I used a thin knotted Perlon loop instead of chain (round nylon with kernmantle sheath). I think the sound of the chain rattling through the D rings as it cinches is supposed to be a signal to the dog, but I sacrificed that. This slips over their heads and the leash clips to this. It has 2 stainless steel D rings -- aluminum would be lighter, but aluminum would likely stain the white ruff.
I do not trust any collar that has those black nylon bayonet clips or buckles. They're probably good enough, but plastic deteriorates eventually.
Metal collar hardware is often cheap plated metal. Try to get real stainless steel.
I have the same problem with Frasier. I had a hard time finding a collar to fit him as an 18 is tight, and the next size up is a 20. So I used an old 20 incher from a previous dog, and placed a ring 3 links up to take up the slack, but it turned his neck grey. I'm going to try painting it with a clear coat laquer and see if that helps.
its the tags i think, you can get plastic covers for them so they don't discolor the fur.
I had the same problem and it was driving me crazy. I'd give Evie a bath, put her collar on after she was dry and this grey color would show up under her neck. It was the metal name tag. Ordered a plastic tag (not expensive) on the web somewhere and the problem was solved. Now she's nice and white until she finds something to roll in and somehow gets brown where there once was white. Silly corgi!
We use these tags on our dogs collars. Both of them used to try to chew their dangling tags all the time. These are high quality, fit a lot of info and quiet :)

Dang, I guess we'll have to look for a new collar, which is also discolored, and make sure we have stainless rings, as well as plastic tags. For the dog park and dog license tags, I'll have to look for plastic covers for those!

Thanks everyone!!
