After we had to abruptly switch Colby's food (old thread), he is not eating the Blue Buffalo puppy food (lamb and rice). He walks up to it and turns his nose up and walks away. He will only eat it if my wife site by the food and drops a few on the ground, or hand feeds him. He used to tear through his food (when it was Puppy Chow or Nutro Max Ultra) the second we put it in front of him... not anymore!

We think that he either does NOT like the food, or he just holding out for something better (like treats / dog cookies). Last night, we decided to take away his food after about 2 hours of putting it down... and he thanked us by vomiting at 5:00 am this morning.

We have decided to switch to Canidae or Innova (based on what people talk about here). Innova is available at the local Pet Store here in Conway, AR... and Canidae is available at a store in Little Rock which is about 35 minutes away. What do people have better luck with? What are the pros and cons for each for Corgis? I have looked through the dogfoodanalysis website, but I know our Corgis are special and might not conform to what that site has to say. :-)

Thanks!

Are you sticking with grain free foods? I have mine on Avoderm. She doesn't like the puppy version, I think she likes lamb so I mix it with the Avoderm Lamb formula. She wolf it down. I will be switching to Nature's Recipe Lamb and Rice. Good luck with your food switching!
is there an advantage to grain-free (besides smaller stools?).
Um, most dogs are allergic to corn, which is why some scratch so much. My Weim is allergic to a good portion of things--corn, beets, yeast, turkey and rabbit, so I have to follow along his diet despite Freya not showing any reactions to any of those foods. It is just easier on us. I was going to switch to Blue, I may still. It seems better than Nature's Recipe which I believe only got a 3 star and minimum protein. Life would be much easier if we could just use Canidae basic formula, the all life stages but there's turkey involved--bah.
Grain Free is healthier..IMO.
If I had to choose something other than grain free, the only additive other than protein, vegetable and fruit must be brown rice.
Corn is a big no no !!
For what it's worth, I just started mine on Canidae, the basic formulation, and they really like it. Stool is much better looking, as well. I can tell it's a far cry better than the Iams they were getting before. Both adult and puppy are on it, though my adult, Junebug, is the picky eater. Puppy Elvis, not so much. He'll eat whatever!
UPDATE:

So, Colby did not try to eat this morning... not even with my wife's help. I called the local pet store and explained my situation, and asked if they had any free samples. They did so I decided to make a trip there during lunch. They gave me 2 different kinds of EVO (regular and red meat), 2 different kinds of Taste of the Wild (cant remember the flavors), and 1 of Nature's Variety (can't remember the flavor). I went home and gave Colby 4 pieces of the EVO red meat... he was hesitant... he tried one... and he tried more. I put 1/3 cup into a bowl and he DEVOURED it and was licking the bowl. I gave him another scoop and he proceeded to clean his bowl again. After almost 3 weeks of not being interested in his food, we feel like we have our puppy back! We even tried to use his food as a reward treat and he was all about it!

Each sample is about a cup of food. We are going to buy a bigger bag of the EVO tonight and start feeding him it regularly. Wish us luck that he doesn't get sick or have runny poops!!!!
How old is he? That might be the deal breaker there !
I wouldn't go grain free until 6 months then even then I'd watch out the amount of calcium in the grain free food.
Both Evo and Canidae ALS (Grain or Grain Free) are good foods.
I started Yogi on the original Canidae ALS when he was 8weeks. When he turned 6months I considered other foods the choices were Evo and Wellness Core. I am not into "staged foods" so that made my list short, plus I stay away from corn and other fillers. Both Evo and Merrick made Yogi very hyper, and I found out about the calcium contents which are both high. Some of these high protien foods will say in the back to refrain for all dogs under 1yr. So I basically left him on the original Canidae ALS.
At 8months we got our first bag of Canidae ALS Grain Free. The protein count is not as high as Evo and the calcium is minimal too. Since then he's been eating and has no problems. His weight is ideal. The vet always comments on it.
He will be 5 months on Jan. 18th. What could go wrong by feeding him the EVO now? I guess I am pretty new to all of this, but this is the first I am hearing that grain free should be avoided until the 6-month mark. Should I switch to something else?
I asked this question recently: http://mycorgi.com/forum/topics/too-soon-to-go-grain-free?page=1&am...

If you scroll down to the bottom, D. Cambell gives a great explanation :)
Staying away from grain free until 6months is my personal rule...just something I felt I had to do with Yogi and with any other dog I get. Maybe even more than 6 months depending on the food.

The reason I think this way is because some grain free foods are very rich in protein and calcium and are not suited for puppies. If you got your food choices off dogfoodanalysis.com they specifically suggest that some of these foods may not be suitable for puppies. This plus other things I gathered from my vet, books and other pet owners led me to this decision.

This is why at 9.5 months Yogi eat Grain Free Canidae ALS, it has 34% crude protein and the calcium is only 1.2%..if I'm not mistaken Evo has higher levels. Plus we tried Evo with Yogi and I thought it made him to hyper and it costs alot more. Now that he's older, more active the grain free is fine for him.

It really boils down to your dog. He may not like either. Just stay away from corn, fillers and other stuff that shouldn't be in food. All they really need is protein, vegs, fruits and a few supplements (if any) ...at your dog's age having some grain such as brown rice or oatmeal in his food may be bad..once he's older and more active grain free will be perfect.
Typo:
...at your dog's age having some grain such as brown rice or oatmeal in his food may NOT be bad..once he's older and more active grain free will be perfect.
Reading your description of Colby turning away from his food and you having to hand feed, sounds exactly like what happened to my little girl, Zaha. Turns out she had pancreatitis and didn't want to eat. I am not trying to be an alarmist, but the turning away from food is how it started with her. Luckily she made a quick recovery, but I would get this checked by the vet. There is a simple blood test they can to check for pancreatitis. I hope I am wrong, but want you to be aware...Pancreatitis is a very serious illness.
