Is your corgi loose, crated or seat-belted when driving in your car?
The corgi car discussion made me wonder how all the corgi lovers drive around with their corgis in the car? Do you leave them loose riding shotgun or with the kids in the back, placed in a doggie seat belt apparatus, or in a crate? I drive a Honda Accord and mostly Lilly is loose(leash on) with my girls in the back seat. She also loves to put her front feet on the center console and look out the windowshield. Occasionally she curls up in the passenger seat. She is never allowed on me when I drive. Sometimes I feel like that is being a bad mom and I'm thinking about setting up a seat belt thing. What do all of you do?

I drive a Toyota Matrix, so I've got a back hatch. Shippo gets run of that back area. I've got a Matrix cargo mat on the floor of it so he's not sliding around, and there's a doggy bed on one half if he wants to sleep. Usually he just lies down until we get to our destination, but sometimes I can hear him rolling around and snorting back there lmao.
If Shippo is with me and I have to haul more dogs than my two, Shippo is crated on the back seat.

ein just loves car rides. he insists on going just about everywhere with me and my daughter during the day. he rides in the backseat with my kiddo. there's definitely a big blanket back there, oh those corgis and their shedding!

When we had a car Mario would jump into the back window. its was funny to see people behind me give the odd look or laugh but now since we have a Truck with an extended cab Ive banished him back there. its perfect corgi sized area!! I dont let either of mine int he front seat cuz its "hey! I gotta bark at that! and oh that!!"

Rosie and George have lookout car seats which fasten to the backseat by using the seat belts. If we are going any distance, they both wear safety harnesses. If they are just riding along to the park then I don't usually make them wear their harnesses. It is also a very good idea to put the name and address of your vet on a card and keep it in your glove compartment so that if you or your dogs are in an accident the police or rescue workers know who to contact if your pets are injured. I also have my son's name listed as a contact so that if my corgis are uninjured, but I am, he can pick them up.
Please don't ever let your dogs ride in the back of a pickup truck. My husband and I seen a black lab fall out of a pickup truck on the expressway and another car hit and killed him.

When I drive with her for a long time, she gets a dog cushion on top of a dog bed, so it's easier for her to see out the window. When I'm sitting in the passenger seat and my husband driving, she's on my lap. She never sits on driver's lap. Both occasions, she is strapped in on seat belt. When she was about 1 year old, we stopped at a rest area while driving a mini van. It was in New Mexico, and we had the window open. Dee Dee was sitting on lap, and all of a sudden, she jumped out! Luckily, she had harness on with leash, and I was able to catch that leash. She was too heavy for me to lift her up by myself, so until my family saw (heard me screaming!), and came to help her back into the car, she was just hanging in mid-air. After that, I don't trust her to be freely roaming... I do let her off the seat belt if we leave her in the car though (only in winter!!) She hasn't figured out how to open the window on her own yet! Thank goodness!! :)

Thanks! With this set up, she actually falls asleep when I'm on freeway. She would never have done it when she was sitting directly on the seat. I wish I was that comfy in the car... (when I'm not the driver, of course!)

i got to thinking about my bear's safety in the car awhile back. he goes everywhere with me... from taco bueno to getting gas to anything, bear is my right hand man. has been ever since he was a baby. since my fiance lives an hour away bear is in the front seat. i have him a dog seat belt; everyone laughs at me (he does look silly in it!) but the thought of (God forbid) getting in a car crash, he'd bounce around like a ping pong ball. so he's in the front seat with me (back seat if daddy is there) with his silly looking seat belt.
the thing that made me get one is i was driving around town one day in the jeep. bear was very little and someone walked out in the middle of the street. i had to slam on the brakes; i didn't hit the guy but bear went flying on the floor of the car. he was fine too but it freaked me out so i got him the seat belt.
maggie, our shepherd lab mix sits in the back. i haven't been able to find a seat belt big enough for all 100 pounds of her yet. but i think she's pretty unbreakable lol!
i don't think you're a bad corgi mom. each mom has their own way. and besides, i really think bear would have so much more fun if i did let him choose where he sat but i'm overprotective to the nines, haha!
if you do want to get one or if anyone on here does, i recommend ebay. i got bear's there for around $8 a year ago and it has never broken or anything.

We have a ford explorer and an older suburban. My dogs ride loose for the most part, usually they just go with me to drop off/pick up kids from school or out to feed horses. I don't take them if they are going to have to be in the car by themselves, Levi ate a seatbelt in my suburban once. KC likes to ride shotgun or sometimes on my lap if we are out on a strait stretch, not allowed in town. Levi is so big that he usually ends up either on the floor board in the back seat or the back back. I have the problem of dogs or kids in seatbelts and kids win hands down. If we go on long car rides then Levi rides in a crate in the back and KC sits on my lap. Taz hasn't really gone for rides yet but I think he will be a back seat or crate dog.

Algy rides is both a mini-van and my civic. When he's in the civic, he usually takes the back seat where his toys are. When he's in the mini-van he hangs out on the floor on a little cushy mat we have for him. If there is food in the car, he tries to squeeze his big corgi butt under the back seat to get at it, but alas, it has never worked. I would like to secure him in somehow, but he goes crazy and attacks his leash when he sees it, and I don't want car rides to be a source of anxiety, especially when he's such a good traveler.

Rueben liked to ride on my lap driving but that's too dangerous. I ended up buying what's called a "Buddy Look-Out" seat. It's straps in with a seat belt in the back seat and its like a tall dog bed. He can lie down in and look all around and see what's going on. He can then be harnessed in. It works like a dream......Whenever he goes for a car ride he hopes right in and climbs in the back and sits in his bed. It also can be taken out and used as a bed while traveling which we have done....brought it into hotels etc. Whenever I wash/vacuum my car and the doors are open, he will hop in and just rest in the car in his seat....kind of funny but its worked out well for us.
