Tricolor coat a disadvantage in hot sun?
I love the beauty of the tricolor coat, but wow, that black fur gets hot in the sun -- even the April sun of central Washington, which is a near-desert -- no snow for making corgicicles here, no water to soak them -- I wonder if the paler reds find it easier to stay cool in hot sun? I suppose heat was seldom a big issue in Wales.
This might be a consideration for people living in hot places with much sun and little shade. Rarely an issue for us, but when it is, they feel it.
UPDATE: I've found hand-feeding mountain snow, when available, a great way to cool the dog. If the dog eats it eagerly, that's an indication that they're hot.

Cute picture haha. Definitely keep water around at all times if you're going to be traveling with your dogs. I saw some Animal Cops episode once (granted, this was in Phoenix, AZ) of a couple who was hiking with their two Boston Terriers and they got too hot and one died. :( So definitely keep water and shade around! And don't bring your dogs on long hikes or walks where it will be VERY hot and there will be little area to rest, lay in some shade, etc.
The corgi coat is very thick (double coat) to protect from the cold in the wintertime while herding... However brushing often can remove excess hair and therefore make your dog a little cooler! If you use a Furminator, your dog might lose about 20 pounds in loose hair alone.. :)

I never got a Furminator because they'll WANT that thick coat most of the time here in western Washington, but it might work for us in July-August. Good idea.
Yes, I've heard of dogs getting heat stroke, an immediately life-threatening first aid emergency. In humans, a symptom is cessation of sweating; in dogs, it might be a dry tongue. Keep that tongue dripping!
To wet a corgi: upside-down between your legs on the ground, soak belly fur with water (else it's like trying to wet a duck's back).
I've learned to take a dog-bottle because they don't empty their bowl, and I can't afford to waste that much water in a dry place, and I don't like sharing their water (I've had to once). We have these "Outward Hound" fold-up dog bowls that weigh nothing [see photo]. You can make an emergency dog water bowl by rolling up a narrow plastic bag.

Sidney is a red, and when we hike in the summer (we always take relatively short hikes, 6 miles or less. Typically MUCH less) he often goes "flat dog" and takes frequent rest breaks.

I think corgi's in general get warm rather quickly. My Kota wont even lay on the bed for long as he gets too hot and then goes to lay down on the cooler floor somewhere... I could see where the darker fur would make them a bit warmer... just like us wearing a dark shirt as opposed to a lighter colored one... Dark colors to hold heat more for some reason. I can't wait to take Kota camping!!!!

You might consider flagging the collar with lots of day-glo fluorescent magenta tape [see photo]. It says: "NOT a fox! Don't shoot!". I've encountered people shooting marmots. Just for "fun". Ick.

Love the picture!! I have a tri and I have noticed that when Maggie comes in from outside her fur is hot to the touch. The Texas sun is not forgiving let me tell you. I keep her indoors mostly and just make sure she has enough water available when she is outside and in the house.

How about some cheap space blacket's reflective material to make a well ventilated half vest of some sort? Yeah, it's gonna hider their movement + the russling noise :( This sounds like a bad music video...

I'd actually thought of that, or some kind of light white cotton muslin "sun dress" poncho.
The mental wheels are grinding into reluctant motion, imagining some kind of Corgi Umbrella made of aluminum foil or space blanket....

Great Picture!!
Algy is black-bodied so he gets super hot in the sun too! What we need for the corgis is one of those hats that holds the two cans of whatever that has the straws funneled to the mouth. Now THAT would make a great picture.
At least your kiddos are enjoying the sunshine a bit!!

A child's T-shirt? Or a special doggie shirt? I'd cut out the belly part. I'm thinking of actually making something. I saw a corgi rain poncho here somewhere that might be a pattern. Maybe a white cloth with a string around the neck or tied to the collar, and some sort of G-string. Thanks for the wetting idea.
