The amazing Leo and the puppy jailbreak!
Leo figured out how to open the latch on Randy's crate (I guess by watching me do it?). Yesterday Randy was having a nap in his crate and when he woke up and barked Leo walked over to the crate and lifted the latch with his mouth and pushed it over to unlock the door. He then took his paw and opened the door to let Randy out. I thought it was a fluke so kept locking the door and Leo kept unlocking it in the same way. He did this 3 times in a row. Wow...now that is a smart dog. Last night Leo unlocked his own crate door from the inside and let himself out when Randy cried in his crate. When all was well again (potty break) I put them both back in the crates and Leo stayed in his even though he knows how to open his own door. How do mere humans compete with this kind of intelligence?

Wow, Leo is some kind of genius! Make sure he doesn't start hot-wiring your car next (and showing Randy how to work the pedals....) I love that he's springing Randy out -- so they are getting along pretty well?

I don't own credit cards..I spend enough without them. Yeah good thing I lock the garage, I can just see these guys cruising town without me. I was amazed myself. Yes they are getting along good today, now that Leo knows Randy is here for good and part of our pack. Makes me wonder just what these two will come up with when I am gone..Oh no!

We've tried to corgi-proof the house (ha ha). Al is nearing 3, Gwynn is 6, and we've hardly ever closed their crates in the past half-year. Don't do this unless your garbage is totally out-of-reach and you habitually slice the bottoms on empty snack bags (we came home to find our first dog running around with a potato chip bag stuck on her head). There's probably a thread on this.

When the boys are older I do plan to leave the crate doors open for them. They go in each night willingly so eventually will stay in all night I would think. All my cabinets have locking doors...old house, built like a ship, so the kids have no access to garbage or anything else. To open the cabinets you have to push a button on the top of the handle...actually Leo could figure this out if he tried. I don't let him mess around with the cabinets so hopefully it is not a problem he is working on. I have heard of Corgis getting trapped and killed inside of bags so I do cut them up and police the yard all the time for stuff blown in.

I want to try a video but I am not real good with my new camera. While I think this was a good example of Leo's intelligence, it is not behavior that I want to reinforce. The reasons are obvious LOL. Crate security goes way down when they break out, and break each other out. Maybe my crates are only minimum security "jails". I would hate to have to go buy extra locks.

We had a standard poodle that was an escape artist. He could escape from anything. Our vet finally started just keeping him in their office when he was there. Our saving grace was that his only interest when he escaped was to be with us. One time a neighbor found him outside and put him on our screen porch. He then did about $700 of damage trying to get into our house. He ate partially through the threshold and badly damaged the door. We finally gave up and left him loose in the house and we had less damage that way. Never did find a kennel he couldn't get out of even with reinforced locks. It is pretty smart that Leo let the puppy out!
