Howdy,

We are planning to get corgi puppy (8 weeeks old). Both of us work. No one will be at home between 8:30 to 5 PM. How does puppy owners handle this? From my readings, I learnt that some one should be attending puppies every 3 hours. Should I look for puppy sitter who can visit the puppy twice during day time?

Please share your opinion.
thanks

Ouch! Yes, that's pretty tiny to be left home alone all day. Usually the common thing is that puppies should only be expected to 'hold it' for as many hours as they are months old, so that'd be 2 hours.

How will this puppy be confined when you are gone?

Although I don't usually like paper training, I would suggest that you devise a puppy-safe area, like a bathroom or a pantry (with all stuff off the bottom shelves), and put papers down in there. At 8 weeks puppy is way too young to be expected to potty reliably outside.

That's an awfully long time for a baby puppy to be home alone. I'll let others chime in - we chose NOT to get our puppy until he was 4 months old, so he could spend more time with mama and with the breeder, and that way was a bit older and able to hold it better. Even so, we swapped around our working schedule until we could leave him no longer than 3 1/2 hours at first. We also crate-trained him, which was fine since we were taking him out all the time, but might not work for you.

What does the breeder suggest??

At 8 weeks that's really even too young to be in a puppy daycare (I think, others may know otherwise) because puppy won't have had all their shots yet. But otherwise that'd be your best bet, perhaps - some sort of a daycare until puppy is older...... Maybe others here have used a puppy sitter that comes by repeatedly though.

Or should I pick the puppy when he is 3 months old from the breeder?
I would say you might want to repost this discussion under one of the general Corgi discussions to get some more input in general about puppies alone..... (maybe you did so already?)

You can also join the corgi mailing list (http://www.corgi-l.org/), this is a nationwide list. For more specific seeking of sitters in the bay area, I'd also join the sfcorgi mailing list, which has people all through the bay area: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/sfcorgi/

Hopefully these can be some use; you need more people commenting than just me, though :)

Molly and I have a great puppy sitter/dog walker, her name is Ailsa with Greenman Pet Sitting which is ran by her and her husband Steve.

When I got Molly I created a puppy safe area and used puppy pads then went home at lunch because for the first month or so I had her on three meals a day.

Good luck,

Hi Nath, I am a new Corgi Puppy owner and I had somewhat the same situation. I didn't want to leave the puppy all day! So, what I did is I went to work early and my daughter didn't have classes until later in the day. so, I came home and worked in the afternoons from home. also, I take Bella to doggy daycare once a week. Its the new "Poochhotel" in Sunnyvale CA. they are great! I would recommend them to anyone. Tell them "Bella sent you".
