Holding the bone?
Anyone else have a dog that insists you do this? Atlas always wants to either have the bone in between my feet or he wants me to hold it while he chews it.
I heard somewhere that this is a "dominance" thing, but I highly doubt it. All it takes is a "let go" command and he gives the bone to me, no problem.
I tried googling it, but all I got one was other anecdotes about other people's dogs who do the same thing, I'm kind of interested to know if there is some kind of canine behavorial explanation, or if this is just something that certain dogs like to do.

We do the same thing for Talula, it calms her down. Sometimes she'll just bark at us until we do this! Other times she's totally content chewing it by herself. Strange corgi behavior? Or is she just spoiled?

Most dogs hold bones between their own front paws while they chew, but our Corgis stubby little legs make it difficult for them to do so.
Sometimes my dog wraps his bone in a towel, holds the towel, and chews through the towel. I really think in the case of the Corgi, it's a matter of them having trouble getting a good hold of it with their own legs. I wouldn't worry if he doesn't show dominant/possessive behavior.

Gee, and I thought Bertie was so smart for getting me to chase sheep for him -- but he's never thought to get me to hold a bone for him! I'm not letting him see this discussion, that's for sure, he doesn't need any more ideas about what I can be doing for him....lol

I will stick the other end of the bone in a KONG. This gives her something bigger to hold on to. Plus, once the bone is chewed down, the remaining end is a toy inside the KONG that she loves to try and pry out. The KONG for "older" dogs is easier to get the bones in and out of since they are a softer plastic.

I wondered if it was a dominance issue, too, but I don't think so. Zero just likes having company and he thinks you're still playing with him, even if you're just sitting on the floor. At least that's what I've concluded. He's just a wee lovey and is perfectly content as long as he can feel you're still there; kind of like our cats.
I wish I had a straight answer for you. I'm pretty sure it's nothing to worry about :)
