I have had my puppy Lilo on frontline since last month, 5 days before her next application, I spotted a flea on her face. I decided to put the next application a few days earlier, but she still has fleas. I know frontline claims that the fleas should die after 12 hours, but it's been a week. I have bathed her, but she still has some. I cleaned the areas where she lays, sleeps and rest. She usually sleeps in my room, I cleaned all the bedsheets, mopped the floor, and wiped the wooden bed. I woke up the next morning with 8 flea bites. I'm not sure if I got them during cleaning or sleeping, but probably when I was sleeping. What should I do for my puppy? What should I use on my house? Do I have to bomb my house or are there other choices before I have to do that?

Oh yeah, definitely stay away from off-the-shelf treatmetns like BioSpot or Hartz. We had a discussion about these last year. (1) They don't work and (2) they cause our dogs a signmificant level of distress!
We are switching from Frontline Plus to Advantage. Im taking Thiago and our two cats in for the vet tech to weigh them and apply it for us, so theres no doubt about it getting applied properly! Last time(3weeks-vet said 3 weeks is long enough to wait for next appl if u have major prob) i even shaved a small spot on Thiagos neck so i can get the Frontline right on his skin. No dice, still fleas. Hes also takes Sentinel, which is suppose to have some effect on fleas, and we still got a problem. We are attacking from all angles. I got Zodiac brand flea shampoo, PROTEIN kind, with aloe, lanolin and oatmeal. Its good for puppies, cats and kittens too. It doesnt smell chemically at all. Just leave your pup lathered up good, very low water in the tub, it says on bottle 5 minutes but i left him longer, and used a flea comb on him while he was lathered up. Almost all fell off in the water. The rest i combed out while he was drying. Im pregnant and we have small children so we did not want to bomb. We have all wood floors which made us think we woiuld never have a problem with fleas. But their eggs can fall in any little crack. We got Zodiac brand spray for the house, washed EVERYTHING with hot water in the machine. I didnt know that the fleas were in the house until after i shampooed him and he was clear one day, coat all shiny, sore skin looked good, and then he slowly got more again. You have to vaccum every two days according to the Zodiac website, but we were vaccuming 2 times a day-you not only pick up vermin that are on the carpet or floor, the heat makes the eggs hatch and come in contact with the spray that is on the floor and they die. Then you have to treat again 10-14 days after first spray to get next generation. I took the vet receptionists advice and put flea shampoo in the mop water. If you can, keep your puppy at someone elses house until you are sure the fleas are gone at your house, because if hes only on Frontline(which doesnt work on fleas anymore) they will just keep attacking the puppy. Capstar pills help to kill adult fleas on your pet but it wont help of their are in the house, though its safe to use with other flea meds. Our pets are my mother in laws house still :-( We are taking every precaution. They got a flea bath there and capstar and flea collars. i miss them all but if they are here they will just be a warm meal for fleas. They are almost gone though. We are sleeping better every night. Good luck with your pup. I hope our experience can help u.
Thank you! =) Which brand of flea collars did you get? And Did you chose Advantage or Advantage Multi? I hope you get to see you pets soon!
Seems like I'm the only one, but I thought I'd share anyway -- Dax had a bad reaction to Advantage Multi (vomiting, some diarrhea, very lethargic which is SO not like him, all this for a couple of days). I'm not really sure why it happened, but it's the reason I don't use any topical preventatives on him now. I've not heard of anyone else who has had a problem with it, but your dog could be the one in a million like mine was. Just be careful what you put on her.

I've heard that flea collars don't work very well, but I've never used one so I can't say for sure. It may help if you pair it with a preventative, but I wouldn't trust it on its own.

I would also be worried about tapeworms. Every time I started to find fleas on Dax (which was twice, before I started him on Sentinel), two or three days later I found worms also...it's disgusting. The first time he got them, I went to my vet who gave him a pill called Droncit, which I later learned you can buy OTC. So the second time he got them, I just went and bought it and no more tapeworms. :) I would definitely keep an eye on her though, tapeworms are pretty easy to spot. Good luck with the flea situation, they're nasty little things.
I got the collars for the same brand, zodiac. Since they are at mom inlaws, and her daughter, hubby and new wiener dog pup live there also, they had to take Thiagos collar off because they said it was making puppy sick. I had asked her to try to keep the puppy away form him bc i really wanted him to wear the collar for a while, but i guess it was too much to ask. They kept the collars on my cats though since they dont go near the puppy and most likely dont let their cant chew on their necks. But my cats smell chemically. When they come home im removing the collars so that i can moosh them again. I will reserve Thiagos collar for park ventures for "just in case" added protection. We got the Advantage. I cant use the muti bc T is already taking Sentinel. I hope to see my furries soon too!
I just want to add that if your having this much of an issue w/fleas I would be very worried about intestinal parasites as well like Tapeworms. I would suggest you talk to your vet about this as well. They do have a pill called Capstar that can rid all fleas w/in 4 hrs. and then to maintain a flea free dog you go to your monthly applications. If your bathing your dog quite a bit and using over the counter flea protection you are probably shortening the time span. You may have to treat your house and yard to get control of the situation also. Vacuum cleaner bags..add a flea collar in it since fleas will live in there. Be careful w/some of the products since they are not safe for younger dogs.
are you using frontline from the vet or from a pet store like petco petsmart, ect. the reason why i ask is my Vet informed me the other day that If you find it any other place than the vet it is usually counterfit.
I subscribe to ANIMAL WELLNESS magazine and they talk about Cinnamin, garlic, and a few other things you can mix with your pets food to help from the inside out with fleas,I make my pups yogurt pops that have fruit, peanut butter, and cinnamin they love it! I got the recipe out of last months DOG FANCY, I also use Bio Spot flea medicine and have not had a single flea this season
Just want to put our 2 cents in.... We vote no on Frontline too! We switched to Comfortis and have found that to be 100% effective for fleas. I believe it's safe for puppies too, but it's only available with vet approval so there'd be no doubt of it's being safe.

We had one problem with fleas in the house (when we were still using Frontline) in the 3+ years that we've had Soffie & Griffyn and I treated the carpet and furniture with 20 Mule Team Borax. Also known as Borateam (sp?) You can find it in the laundry detergent section at most grocery stores. Here's a link to a page that tells how to use it in your home. If you follow the instructions it works!!!

We're using Frontline on Shiro, and he only had one flea, after playing at a dog park. We did encounter 3 ticks on him in 2.5 months, although one was dead. This is not fun, so we're gonna switch him to K9 Advantix in a month. For now just checking him for ticks every day.
Also we're buying this natural pet soap that repels ticks and fleas.
