I had always used a Harness when training Shorty, and he was a breeze to train to walk, heel, etc.
His collar was just to hold his tags.
My little 'Rowdy' is proving to be more challenging than my Shorty was.
I wondered what the majority of corgi owners used? I am starting Rowdy on leash training, he is 9 weeks old. I have been getting him used to a harness the last several days, and he is 'tolerating' it.
I guess I always felt subconsciously that the harness was better, but wondered what others thoughts are specifically with the Corgi?
Thanks for your input!

*UPDATE*... sooooo, I put Rowdy in his 'beloved' Harness (note sarcasm...) last night and tried to put a leash on him for the first time. What a disaster.Aside from the frantic scratching and biting at the leash, him refusing to walk and just rolling on his back (cue to visual of me dragging him across carpet like I am pulling a sled... lol)... then him continuing to try and get out of his harness. AND him growling and throwing a fit. It was NOT a proud moment.
As much as I love puppies, I long for the days where he already knows how the world and all of its strange contraptions (ie: harness/leash) work.
Sooooo, I will try again tonight.... maybe I will just leave the harness on him for hours at a time for a few more days until he realized he cannot escape.
Times like these make me miss Shorty even more.
With Shorty, I put on the harness for the first time and he could care less. He tried to chew at it once or twice, but never fought it.
I literally took Shorty on one walk and he had the whole walking on a leash thing down pat!
I need prayers... lots of prayers... please!! lol

NEW UPDATE 8-17-09:
Thanks for all of the advice everyone. After buying a choke collar (the one that is half regular collar with a section of chain that tightens...) I finally have a puppy that will walk on a leash!!! Nevermind the three days of EXTREME protest and him screaming/whining bloody murder when we would be pulling him along to walk. Nevermind that we would not even be hardly moving and we were not hurting him in any manner.
well, I am already teaching him to heel, so pulling should not be a problem... ohhh, I better knock on some wood.

The leaving it on is a good idea. We did this with Apex (husky) when she had to get used to a leash that also went around her muzzle. We loosened it a little more then she would have during walks so she could pant/drink/normal dog things in the house. Just had her get used to a strap around her muzzle.
Lilly is great with a regular collar, Brody is a puller, Just got an Ilusion Collar from Cesar Milan (we were making one with his collar, looping the leash higher on his head and it seemed to work) so we're hoping the real thing will be perfect. It just came yesterday, so haven't had a chance to really try it out yet.
I've got one of those set-ups also Jordan reacted so badly to it (alligator rolling) that I took it off and haven't tried it since that was 9 months ago. I moved to a choke to train him. let me know how your pup reacts to the illusion collar =)
Walked them yesterday and Brody did great with the new collar... still out front a bit, but not pulling my arm our of the socket!
I have both for Ella, collar and harness. However we hardly use the harness. She was good, most of the time, on just a regular collar and leash (I only use a retractable leash for play dates so she can run around). The harness we go just doesn't fit her long body very well. I bought a medium, which was right for her weight (around 14 lbs at the time) and it said that it could be used up to 25lbs. She ends up walking funny when she has it on because it seems too short. The front to back bit can't be adjusted, just the around. Any suggestions on harnesses?
I would much rather a harness. It's so much easier to control them. I tried to buy...I forget what they're called..the kind that are meant to hook in the front, because Dax has a pulling problem, but I could NOT get it to fit right. The medium was too small and the large was too big. I returned it and got a regular harness that hooks on his back...works GREAT. He still pulls a little, but one little tug on the leash and he stops. And it goes around his chest instead of his neck like a collar does, which is really what I like best about it. It actually has a ring in the front that I could clip the leash to if I wanted to, but I've never tried it....maybe I'll give that a shot. But with a regular collar, I thought he would choke himself the way he pulled.

I would not suggest leaving the harness on for an extended period of time. An hour or so at a time for him to get used to it should be okay, just make sure it fits him right and make sure he's supervised. I've seen dogs with harnesses left on getting caught up on things. I even brought Dax to a little meet and greet with a daycare I was thinking of bringing him to, and someone had left their harness on their dog while it was playing with the other dogs! I was worried for the poor thing. Sure, a collar can get caught while playing, but a harness has a much higher chance of it because of all the straps. But for walking? We're harness people around here. No collapsed tracheas in this house! :)
I use a harness for Lance, as he pulls ALOT and its to the point that he chokes himself. The harness has worked out great for us. I have heard that harnesses will actually make your dog pull more but maybe because Lance is older thats not really the case, its much easier to walk him with a harness.
I have both. In his normal day to day routine (walks in the neighbourhood, going out to pee) we use just a collar and a leash. His harness is used on car rides (its part of hi seatbelt) and when we walk him when we get to wherever we've gone. This is usually just for convenience as sometimes he resists getting into the harness so its easier just to leave it on him so we can just put him back in the car and connect his seatbelt.
