The other night as I was saying goodnight to Lance and petting him, his paws were really raw. One paw is really bad and the others are getting worse.

I bought a comfy cone to stop the licking tonight, it has worked somewhat. He is tolerating it too. :) I am thinking maybe I should have gotten the clear one instead.

I am concerned about work in the morning. If we leave the cone off I am afraid he is going to do more damage to himself while I am at work. Wearing the cone with no one home is proabably not safe even if we gate him in the kitchen. This seems to be a no win situation. :(

Any advice would be greatley appreciated.

Hi Carolyn,
Okay just applied the ACV/Water on his paws he seems to want to lick it more? Does it burn do you know, it seemed like he was holding his paw up for a second. I put it on with enough time to dry before work.

Where do you get the OX-E drops from?
Hi Natalie!

If Lance has really chewed up his paws, it might sting a little. I haven't had any issues with Silas with the ACV (and his paws have been really red and raw), but I am sure every dog is different. The baking soda paste would probably be a good idea if his paws are in bad shape. It is soothing, won't burn at all, and it's OK if he eats it. LOL You could do the baking soda for a while, and then move to ACV / Listerine. Oh, and the Ox-E drops don't sting at all.

Here's where I got the Ox-E drops. I use them as part of the overall treatment discussed on the site, but the drops alone do a lot of good: http://www.nzymes.com/pc/viewContent.asp?idpage=16#Foods_OK

And... here's the direct link for the drops: http://www.nzymes.com/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=17
(The drops last a long time even though the bottle is small. It's really concentrated. Mentioning this because when I first saw the price I had to wonder!) You make a solution to use topically, and you also will put the drops in his water too. A lot of sites recommend Ox-E, which is always good to know :-)

One quick question while I am thinking of it: if you look at Lance's underarms (the equivalent of doggie arm pits) are either of them red, inflamed, or without hair? Does he scratch at his ears at all?
Hi Carolyn!

After the ACV was on for a minute or so he was alright, yes his underarms are red also, has some hair. Yes, he does scratch at his ears and last time I took him to the groomer he was shaking them alot, she mentioned to me. I had noticed him doing that at home too, I have mentioned it to the vet several times thinking maybe he had an ear infection but he always says they look fine!?
It must be from the allergies he is scratching from, we have gotten ear drops before for his ears.

Okay, well ttyl....off to get ready for work I go!!!
Hi Nat!

Yeah... most vets will tell you that any type of allergy is hard to treat, or that things look fine, or they don't know what the issue is. When we were trying to figure things out with Silas, our vet would put him on meds (for example, to treat an ear infection or skin infection) but as soon as he would go off of the meds, the problems came back. It was like his symptoms were being treated, but not the source. The good news is we figured it out to the point where Silas has been doing tons better. :-)

The scratching ears / chewing paws / red underarms might indicate he has allergies (seasonal or food), but it could also mean he has yeast issues, or all of the above, really. Also, lots of times yeast issues look like allergies (even to some vets). Now of course, I'm only basing this on our experience with Silas (and knowing that our two guys are related) but the fact that he is also having the ear scratching + the underarm redness is a flag for me that it might be more than seasonal. Usually, the underarms is more of a "yeast" thing. You can also use the Ox-E or the ACV on the underarms and in his ears too.

Food allergies are a PITA. I have lots of info on what worked for us food-wise. I'd be happy to share, but I didn't want to pummel you with too much info LOL. :-)
Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for all your tips. :) What exactly does the ACV do? If you want to send me more tips on food go right ahead!!
I've worked at a vet clinic for around 3yrs and a cheaper suggestion for inhaled allergies is benadryl. You give them 1mg per pound of bodyweight. I give Toby 1 tablet (25mg) at night, even though he's 33lbs, and it seems to work very well, but it does make he a little drowsy. MAKE SURE THE BENADYL ONLY HAS DIPHENHYDRAMINE IN IT! and nothing else. Diphenhydramine is harmless to dogs in the right amount.

Hope this helps,
Morganne
We also give Lance Benadryl too, our vet prescribed him some and we still have some left over. Thanks :)
I suppose I should have put that in the post!
Is it okay to use Benadryl spray as well, it has Diphenhydramine and 0.1% of Zinc Acetate...which is a skin protectant?
Natalie....Spencer wiggled his way out of his inflatable neck tube and got a hold of his back paw...its now RAW....so, he is coned with the comfy cone and benedryl while we are at work....I am a nervous wreck....gonna call the vet this morning and find out what to do next....i am at a loss. I am going to try the listerine and the ACV...
Poor Spencer :( I give the ACV thumbs up!!!! I also think that the neosporin helps it heal as well. I try to put a thin layer on as Lance likes to lick it up, so then I dabbed the ACV on a napkin and wiped down his paws over the neosporin. Let me know what your vet says. Hope Spencer feels better soon and so does Lance. :)
My Aussie is on daily Benadryl for the same reason (only I don't think his is seasonal, I think his is a skin allergy). The Benadryl does help, but I would much rather have him on something natural. If you find anything that works well let me know!
Looks like Lance made it through my work day!!!! :) His paws look just as good as when I left!! I put neosporin on his paws and of course he loves it, so then I dabbed the solution of half ACV and water and it must have worked! I also had a serious talk with Lance about not licking while I was gone. I walked out to our garage which is connected to the kitchen. I opened it up and said I will be watching you, I will be back soon and to be good!!! I acted like I left but really didnt and about a minute later opened up the door and again gave my speech lol. His ears were back, so I know he was listening as he was sitting in the kitchen gated. :)

I also gave him 1 benadryl before I left for work and I think it is wearing off because now that I have been home hes at it again!! :( So I dont have to use the cone the whole time I am home I put him on a leash and keep him near me so I can correct him as soon as I catch him licking. I even have to watch him when I let him out to go potty because instead of going this morning he was outside licking his paw!!! Im starting to wonder if him not wanting to go in the grass has anything to do with his allergies, maybe. He doesnt like wet grass either but he has gotten better about it but again this week is not liking it again.

Sidenote: I also used dermasphere Anti-itch shampoo for dogs which relieves dry skin, has special moisturizer, soothes the skin and contains hydrocortisone. Provides relief from inflammation and itching. I also heard that oatmeal and aloe vera dog shampoos are soothing as well.
