I have a 3 year old Corgi, and as most of you know it gets pretty hot in Texas during the summer months. I thought it would be a good idea to get her a summer hair cut... well I didn't realizing that some dogs are not meant to be clipped. Rue has patches of hair on her back and neck that are not growing back. I looked this up on the internet and found the term Clipper Alopecia, it looks very similar to the patches on Rue's back and neck. Has anyone every had this issue? I would really like to hear your story...
Thanks

Did you do it this last summer? If so it will probably come back. Some "clipper alopecia" is actually that the hair that was cut was in a resting and not growing phase. Double-coated dogs' topcoat can rest and not grow for months and months. Once it cycles back into growth it will fill in again. If you did it a year ago or more and it still hasn't come back, it could be thyroid or adrenal or true clipper alopecia, which is thankfully rare but does exist.
This happened to my first corgi, Pete, after his back was shaved to treat a dog bite. It didn't grow back entirely for a year! Joanna is right, it has to do with the resting phase of the double coat. Thankfully it does finally fill in. Best to you and Rue.
Yes, I have had her cut the past two summers, I'm sure it will come back! Thanks for your thoughts! We are pretty sure it is not a thyroid issue b/c she is still young an is not having any weight problems, which tends to happen with the thyroid. The vet said to watch her coat and if she is not aggravated with her patches; like licking and scratching them than she will be ok. So we will just wait and see, I very curious to see how long it will take to grow back. Thanks again:-)
