Hi everyone. I started a discussion in the main forum on heartworms but I would really like to hear from other people in Arizona so I'm posting here as well, hoping for your input and advice.
Finnigan is not on a heartworm preventative and when I asked the vet's office about it they said they leave it up to each owner but heartworm is not a huge risk in many parts of Arizona and if your dog is mainly indoors it is highly unlikely they would get heartworms. The vet tech did however say that they have seen more diagnosed cases over the past few years as people move here from other states more with dogs that have heartworms and since all it takes is one bite from a carrier mosquito, it's a tough call.
I have lived here all my life and growing up we never had our dogs on heartworm meds. We never had a problem with heartworms and I never knew anyone here who did. So, have you had an experience with heartworms in Az? What does your vet say about heartworms? Is your dog on a preventative? I appreciate whatever information you have to offer because I'm completely torn on what I should be doing for Finn.
