I came home today and let Beni out. He was pretty excited running around outside, but he didn't poop. Then, when he came in, he was running around some more and pooped on the carpet. Then, he ate it!
Really grossed me out.

He's never done anything like this before. He really is good about holding it until we let him out. My guess is that he knew he should have pooped inside, and he wanted to cover up what he had done.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? I guess I need to keep a better eye on him when he hasn't had his normal "schedule" and make sure he gets outside in the middle of his excited play time.

I watched that too and it was a good point. I wonder why they eat other animals poop though like cats and birds. Where's the appeal there?
I'm not sure, but I would think along the same line where there is properly some nutrients within the cat or bird poop that was not fully processed.
Nutmeg ate her poop for a few months, but has stopped that (she's 15 months) and continues to eat any cat poop she finds outside. She will not eat Cinnamon's poop, nor any other random dog poop. Only cats! I dislike cats.
Lola loves poop! Especially the feline kind. Every time we let her out of the crate, she bolts for the cat box. Boomer can't figure out why she want's his poop!
I talked to several breeders before we got our second Corgi, Maddie. When I informed them we have a cat, all of them mentioned something along the lines of "The cat shouldn't be an issue, but I can't make guarantees about the litter box!!" LOL

I think the majority of dogs enjoy cat poop, given half a chance. Cats eat a very high-protein diet and I think there are plenty of tasty nutrients left in their poop. Blech!
Most dogs that eat poop, there own or others are doing it becuase they are lacking a mineral. Try feeding your dog things like bananas, apples, carrots and/or broccolli as treats. For dogs that like to eat there poop lot when you let them out and watch them if they go to eat it, make a the sound that gets there attention and give them one of the above foods as a treat for listening and not eating there poop.
We have tried feeding ours pineapple and it seems to work well...Howie stills has a taste for poop at times though.
