i'm confused. we recently adopted two rescue american eskimos. both were constipated
as a result of their stay in a shelter and our vet recommended pumpkin or green bean
baby food. he said both had fiber to help loosen them up. i'm confused as it seems some use these for loose poop.

ROFL that's the best explanation to date.
Here is a site I found that I think you may be able to order from, although make sure you get just canned pumpkin not the pumpkin pie mix one:

We are having this issue with loose stools! How much pumpkin should I add to food? Sir Pupenstein gets 3/4 cup each meal and I'd say I put.... maybe 4 tablespoons in?

What's the right amount? He loves it! Not effective yet though :(
I usually give a couple globs, maybe two tablespoons or so. If it does not work in a few days, then I would look at bigger issues. Parasites, or a food intolerance maybe.

Edit: I just checked your blog post and notice you've been traveling a lot. You might want a stool sample tested for coccidia or giardia (the latter can be hard to pick up in a culture sometimes). The coccidia usually occurs in younger pups, but if he's traveled a lot the stress could have given him a larger load than he can handle, I suppose.
Hey Beth! Thanks! That's what I'm thinking too... that it might just be from traveling so much. His poo was tested right before we left - maybe 3 weeks ago - and turned up clean.

I just thought I'd take a home approach because, whooo, those poo samples and vet visits start to add up after a while :)
Yes, and as long as he is not having watery diarrhea, you can certainly take a wait-and-see approach.
Thanks! I just hope it gets better!!!
