Bloody bottom?
I'm having a "booty" issue with Baxter. It looks like his anus is somewhat swollen and red. When he poops (most of which is normal, other times soft but not runny) and I clean his bottom off, there is some blood. He was having a poopy-pants sort of day on Sunday and at first I thought I might had wiped too hard/too many times. The blood isn't dripping, and I've heard that anal bleeding just happens in dogs some times, but this is my first experience with it. I called the vet and they suggested cutting back his food and giving him some Pepto-bismol and that stopped the softer poops, but now they seem to be more solid and on the harder side. I'm thinking about giving him some pumpkin tonight and monitoring the issue a couple more days. He doesn't appear to be staining when he's pooping. He's drinking plenty of water and his activity level is very good. His doesn't appear to be in any pain and only seems mildly annoyed when I'm cleaning his bottom. The skin around the top of the anus is also red.
I took Baxter to the vet awhile ago for diarrhea and I'm pretty sure I overreacted. I don't mind being safe, it's not the cost as much as I don't want to be such a worrier when it may really be nothing.

Yes. Eddy had these exact symptoms. Bloody poo, yet he acted normal , not sick. He ate normally but only poo'd runs of diahhrea. We changed his meals to a very simple diet, rice chicken pumpkin etc. Did not help for over a week, in fact he started puking up the rice sometimes (while still activity level was normal). Finally I went to the vet for tests and they found nothing, however prescribed an anti-biotic "just in case" which ticked me off since I'm anti-anti-biotics. But that's what finally helped him, within 2 days. Who knows what bug was in there. I don't know if this helps. I worry a lot too and call my vet about what I know is dumb stuff all the time.

Thanks, it does help. I called the vet after posting this and they said I can drop him off tomorrow to have him examined. I figure I'll see how he does tonight and tomorrow morning and if it is still bloody I'll take him in.

Was the blood fresh red or black and tarry? What else did Baxter consumer besides kibble? Any rawhide or sticks? Is he currently on any kind of medication? What's his temperature? Generally blood in stool can be a wide range causes, anything from change of food, parasites to parvo...etc.

The blood is fresh red and it's only on his bottom and not in the stool. Baxter hasn't eaten anything out of the norm, but he may have had some cat food and possibly a bite of kitty litter on Saturday night. I have recently (within the past two weeks) changed his food from Castor Pollux Organix to Orijen Six Fish. I did it over a week's time with a gradual change over. During the change, he had normal stool. He eats antlers for chews and the last one he got seemed like it left more debris than the first one he ever had. So once this started happening I took it away. He's not on any medication and his temperature has been normal.

Can be as simple as a scratch from passing a piece of stick, to something very serious. I think dropping him at the vet is good. Jack has had a bit of bright red blood twice, when he had the runs and had several watery stools in a row, but the blood cleared up when the poops returned to normal (within 12 hours). For a prolonged event I would want a vet exam.

Do his anal glands need to be expressed?

I don't believe so. My boyfriend was a dog groomer before and he doesn't think so. Baxter hasn't been rubbing his bottom on the floor or anything like that.
