I was walking Perky, and she found something on the ground, which turned out to be raw chicken that my mom had thrown out earlier, and she ate some of it before I realized it was even there.  Should I be concerned?  I've heard someone say that they fed their pets raw meat before, but some people say not to.  It's too late to call the vet...Anyone know if it's safe?

if the meat was not spoiled, laced with ants or cooked under the hot sun, it should be fine.
It wasn't out of date, but my mom had set it out of the fridge too long, so she threw it out. I was walking Perky to see if she had to go to the bathroom; it was dark, so I couldn't tell what she was eating until I took her back inside and went to get the flashlight.

I was just concerned because I had read that pets can get e. coli and salmonella from raw food, and I'm not sure how much she ate.
While it's true they can, they have a shorter gut then we do and are much less prone to it than we are. If you look at our teeth, we were meant to be primarily herbivores who also ate some meat. If you look at a dog's teeth, they are just the opposite (designed to be mostly carnivores with the ability to digest vegetable matter if the need arises).

Our guts don't come very well equipped to handle raw-meat germs. Dogs are better able to do so. So they can get salmonella, but they are not likely to do so from a small amount of chicken that was only out for a few hours. :-)

Remember, these are animals who can eat poop with no ill effects. lol I can certainly understand your concern, though. Mark the date (well, you have this thread) and if any tummy issues arise that don't go away on their own within the next few weeks, think "chicken." Again, though, it's not likely.
Oh, one last thing, though: they can shed those germs in their feces even if they don't themselves get sick, so for the next week or so you might want to be thorough about washing your hands after handling her but before eating, if you want to be super-cautious.
She should be fine. They have tougher stomachs than we do. Even bones are usually ok if they are raw, though they can on rare occasion cause a problem.
Okay, thanks. =)
Our dogs have lived on raw meat all their lives.
Cooked stuff is different; people throw spare ribs etc. out of their cars and the dogs pick this up, and cooked bones can splinter in the gut, causing problems.
Sirius used to swallow raw chicken legs, wings and necks whole, no problem, the bones would disappear. The problem is if they try to gulp something too big. She choked to death on a raw turkey neck.
It's a good idea to get everybody in the household onboard, recognizing that a corgi will eat ANYTHING.
Sorry to hear about Sirius. =(
I agree, they will eat ANYTHING. I just asked her to let me know next time she throws something out, so hopefully Perky won't find it first next time. Thanks for the info though.
My dogs eat raw meat every day are not only healthy but thriving. As long as it wasn't rancid she'll be fine. And while it's true they shed salmonella in their feces, many kibble fed dogs do as well (and some people do too), and it's just general good practice to clean up your dogs' waste and wash your hands if handling it for any reason. =)
