OLD AGE & PEEING IN THE HOUSE.

My 14 yr old lab mix Caleb has recently started peeing in the house. He's never peed in the house the whole 13.5 yrs I've had him. At first I thought it was because of the arrival of his new little brother Archie, then I thought just to be sure I'd take him to the vet & have him checked out. It just so happens that 3 wks after Archies arrival, Calebs kidneys are starting to slowly fail. My question is during the day I can be around enough to let him out as much as needed, but at night I let him out around midnight, then again at 6:30am, this is proving to be too long of a wait for him. This is my first experience with an elderly mildly incontinent dog, ANY SUGGESTIONS? TO HELP CURB THE OVERNIGHT ACCIDENTS?

There is something called a belly band for dogs. You can put a sanitary napkin in some of them to absorb the urine. They are machine washable, too. In fact, you probably could buy one and make a dozen of them yourself, if you are handy with sewing after you see how they are made.

Lucky can"t keep diapers on because he seal walks, but that is a good option. You can make a wrap, or bellyband and place a baby diaper in it (you can also purchase bellybands, google, mine was sent to me) Another, new to me, option is the pee keeper (www.peekeeper.com) for Lucky it is great because he cannot pull it off with his seal walking. I bought cloth thick baby diapers at Target for less than Walmart online. I sew, so can make "weiner wraps" and I found washable waterproof covering to use (like baby diaper cover) at JoAnn and Hancock fabricks)

I'd put a pad or towels under him when he lies down, Lucky pees when trying to get up.

Can you contain him in the kitchen or laundry room at night? My grandchildren told me of friend that used those fake grass pads - I still can't figure hoe you would empty withot spilling and making a total mess!

Good Luck, I know what you are going through, as Lucky (9 yr) has problems because of his IVDD. I am "spot" cleaning witn a product that I dilute called Bio Ox, got it at a home show, seems to work well, I don't smell urine, and friends haven't said anything.

I've seen the grass pads that actually sit inside a lipped plastic mat; you can take out the grass and clean the bottom of the lipped container, then put the grass back in it.

If you wanted to DIY, you can buy fake grass, and buy a plastic mat with a lip and then fit/cut the grass into the plastic mat. That way you wouldn't have to worry about spillage when trying to move it outside/to a sink to clean it out.

I love the idea of the doggy door, because that works for us. My Old Dog goes a LOT, and I hear him during the night going out the doggy door to the fenced back yard. We've had to start closing the door when we're not home, since he's begun going outside and barking non-stop, looking for us, I guess. Those have been the only times he's had an accident, and it's always been in the kitchen, by the door.

Old Dog has other issues, like falling down. But he, like Caleb, has been just the best dog for 15 years now. I'll give him all the help he needs now, since he's given so much to us.
