Well i havent had a chat with my vet about that, but my breeder has talked it over with me and ive heard that if you do it around 6 months the legs may become longer and just a tad less "corgi-like". I am probably going to neuter cooper at 7 or 8 months.
Soren is 6 1/2 months old right now. I was going to try to wait until 8 or 9 months, based on the breeder's advice, but he's already showing "boy-like" behaviors. The vet recommended 6 months. So, I'm probably going to schedule it next month.
wish we had done it at 4 mo. but we just re-homed him then, and wanted him to get adjusted. but, it seems the time is right now because he's bothering lucy >chuckle< . so, we're snipping in 2 wks. i tried to change the appt to this week but no openings. just hope he does well. my feeling is, the smaller the puppy, the smaller the incision and recovery time. rafa is quite long in the leg already, so i guess it's time. poor little guy. btw, did your boys need to wear that collar? to me that's worse than the surgery! i also seem to remember (altho my memory is not reliable) that neutering for the boys was easier on them than the girls.
I neutered Rufus at 4 months and it was a breeze. He had a teeny incision and since he's got a fairly long body, he couldn't even get to his stitches and didn't need to wear a collar at all. I don't remember him even trying to get to them, though, and within a few hours he acted like nothing had ever happened to him. My vet did tell me, though, that if you neuter them that early, they'll have a head that's shaped more like a females. I don't know if that's true, but decided I didn't care, as we had a trip scheduled and I wanted him completely recovered before we had to board him.
I got Orion neutered right at 4 months and he recovered super fast. I'm a big advocate for early age spay and neuter since I work with a rescue group and all our animals get neutered before they're adoptable. I'm glad I got Orion done at 4 months. So far I haven't seen any "boy behaviors" that people tend to not like. He's never marked anything, humped anything, etc. He's still young (he'll be six months on september 16th) but hopefully they won't ever start. I've heard that the neutering early causing less corgi-like features thing is not true and I really don't see why neutering a dog would cause their legs to grow longer, the stubbiness of the legs is due to a specific dwarfism gene so I don't see how neutering could mess with this but then again, I'm not a dog geneticist. Anyways, most vets (including the ones I work for) do say between 4 and 6 months so I'd trust what your vet says and choose somewhere in that time frame.
We had Rafa neutered a week ago at 5 months. He had a tiny incision and no need for that collar. He was in at 8am and out at 3pm. You'd never know he had surgery. He was his busy self immediately.
Most of your agility people will not neuter/spay til around a year old. I do not like either procedure done early..they need those hormones to develop strong and healthy. There has been an increase in UTI's with early spaying. Your talking about a long backed dwarfed dog that needs to develop properly. Hormones promote alot of different functions in the body. The health risks of having an intact dog are not that great. It is a scare tactic to promote the procedures.
