Puppy and loving discipline

I've had Corgis my whole life and that's a lot of years. Corgis are working dogs that need meaningful activity and discipline. The time to start training is when your baby Corgi comes home. Corgis are very smart and they will be a step ahead of you, if you let them. DON'T let them. They love to know the rules, work hard and be praised. The earlier you start lovingly training your puppy, the more rewards you will have later with your adult Corgi who listens for your command and happily performs it. A rescue dog needs the same training, but first needs to trust its new family. Knowing that your rescue is experiencing a hard transition will hopefully make you more patient and compassionate. Be loving and earn the trust of your rescue. But whether a puppy or a rescue, train your Corgi well and as early as you can. Every Corgi and owner thrive through combined work and effort.

I have a Houdini too. Last week I put Ffionn in his crate on the third floor before going to run some errands. When I got home and opened the front door, there he was. He'd not only gotten his crate door open somehow, but he'd gone down two flights of stairs, at less than 10 weeks of age. I don't ever remember any of my other dogs self-teaching themselves about stairs at such a young age.

We had a Brittany who used to spend a fair amount of time every day checking every inch of the fence for potential escape routes. When she found one, she would round up our corgi and the two of them would go off on adventures. They sometimes ended up at our upscale dog pound, at $30 a night and a "dog running loose" fine, sometimes showed up back home stinking to high heaven, and were sometimes rescued by kindly people who checked their tags and called us. It only happened a couple of times a year, but I could pretty much count on it happening. I'm hoping Ffionn isn't as talented at escapes as Alix.

@ Betts- 10 wks old and worked his way out of the crate...hmmm...sure seems like you've got another talented escape artist!

Sonny is apparently a Houdini also! A 40# corgi Houdini who goes underneath, I don't get it! I could understand it if it was Lucky somehow slipping through the fencing, so now I have to go out whatever the weather and watch him. At least Sonny goes out and in rapidly.
