Teddy (about 3 mos) is one of Mattie's pups and he's been scratching his ear a lot lately. I checked and didn't see anything in there except some blood from when he had been scratching and went to Petco to buy him something to help ease the itch. Has anyone ever tried this before? I put it in about 5 minutes ago but the poor little guy is still sporadically scratching and whining as he does it. How quickly does it work? I know it's only supposed to be once every 2 weeks. And how long should I give it before seeking the vet?

Seriously guys - help!!! I feel so bad for this little guy - all he does when he has to itch is scratch & cry while he does it!
Hi Mattie's mom! Check Teddy's ears for dirt and waxy buildup, smell it and see if it's yucky, if so you may need to be treated for infection / mites. Your vet might prescribe you with some inflammatory drops. In the mean time, go to the medicine cabinet and get some cotton balls, dap 50% water / vinegar and clean the inside of the ears, make sure there are no more blood / reddish gunk. After the wash, dap some baby oil with cotton balls and coat the inside of his ears.
I personally would take him to the vet asap. Ear infections can be very painful, and I would be very wary of using those over the counter drops without knowing exactly what is wrong (yeast infection? mites?). I would also be concerned about the possibility of a hematoma in the ear from the excessive scratching.
