I am starting to go on longer walks and short hikes in an effort to lose weight and get fit. I would love to take Ein with me every time, but she's still so young (just over 4 months). I took her on a short hike today, about 1.5 miles on rocky desert terrain with very little incline. We went slow cause I'm out of shape and I let her take time to smell the plants, so it wasn't all go go go. She absolutely loved it, and I loved having her with me, but I worried the whole time. I know that just because she can do it doesn't mean it's good for her. How much is good her? What distance or amount of time could she spend walking with me each day/week without causing problems to her growing little body? Any insight into this would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the response Donald. I just worry about her growth plates, causes she's only 4.5 months old. She acts like she could walk all day long, but I didn't know how much was good for her and how much was too much. I have a pretty good idea now. Unfortunately we haven't been getting quite as much walking in this week, cause I'm in the midst of training her to loose leash walk. We've been playing in the backyard a lot though cause, yes,the daytime weather has been beautiful. I even had lunch out on the back patio today.

P.S. You have a herd of good looking Cardis.

Hi there, just wanted to add in that if you're increasing her exercise you may want to adjust her food as necessary and consider adding a vitamin for joint health as she get solder if you intend to exercise significantly.. I'm nto sure what food she's on but quality food makes a huge difference. Make sure you have lots of water for Ein, and judge from her ability to bounce back to full energy the next day before making it an everyday activity.. we recently did a 3 mile trail hike and the net day, Ollie (9 months at the time) was wiped out! I think this is both from the exercise as well as the overwhelming new scents and scenes to take in. Additionally, Ollie's dog walker advised us to cool him down periodically on long walks by pouring some cool water on his neck & chest... they make "cool down" bandana type things but the water is just fine for us. Keep in mind that when it's hot for us, it's realllllllllly hot for our furcoat-friends.. Lastly, if you're walking her in new places, please make sure she's on flea/tick/etc. preventative and check her over (including the pads of her feet) once you get home.. she's a little one so she may not be on any yet but it's easy to be exposed to critters and the elements!

Ollie let's me know when he's done or I can tell he has "sleepy eyes" like a child. We also taught Ollie "wanna go home?" and he will come over or tug towards the car as soon as we say it if he's done for the day and ignore it if he's not.  When we hike or have a long playdate, we say it to check in and he seems to intuitively know... maybe I'm attributing too much to my lil master but it works for us. :) I think Ein is one lucky pup to have a mom who cares so much and walks her so diligently!

Thanks for the response. Great information. I have been periodically increasing her food. I watch to see how hungry she is in between meals, how she's growing and gaining weight, and how much we exercise together. I am planing on buying her a higher quality food once this never ending bag runs out. I took the breeders advice on food before doing research of my own and now I'm stuck with a giant bag of dog food I'm a not crazy about. You live and learn. I also give her a puppy multivitamin every morning. I started that about 3 weeks ago, and she loves them. We have one of those water dispensers for dogs, so she pretty much has a never ending supply of water. In fact the dogs have one inside the house and outside as well. I did notice that she was pretty lethargic the day after our big 3 mile hike. We didn't go any walks at all for a few days after that cause I got a blister so bad on the back of my heal that broke open. I couldn't wear anything on my feet but flip flops. When we go on the 1.5 mile hikes it doesn't seem to phase her at all. She's up a raring to go again the next day. I wish I had her energy. The water cool down is a great idea. I'll remember that for when it gets a little warmer. I never thought to get her on flee/tick prevention. I'll have to look into that. It's never really been an issue where we live, but then we never took our other dogs hiking, so that changes things.

That is so cute that Ollie can tell you when he's ready to go. Our dachshund lets us know when he's ready to go home when we're at my mom's house. That's the only place I've ever seen him do it. He'll sit quietly and stare at us until he catches our eye, and then he'll run to her front door. When we say, "Are you ready?" He dances around like Sparky in the kibble dance video. LOL Ein is a pretty lucky pup, and it's nice being able to say that with confidence. I have to admit that I wasn't the best mom I could be to my last girl who I had to put down last March. I was loving, and affectionate, and she had a great home and life here. Unfortunately, she went blind at age 4 so it was really hard (almost imposible) to walk her, and instead of being persistent and working together as team, I gave up on walking her. I also didn't feed her very good food, and I could give the excuse that I didn't know any better, but nothing was stopping me from doing the research and getting informed. I miss her so much, and I know I gave her a great home, I just wish I didn't have a single regret. I think that's why I'm being the best mom I can be to Ein. Plus I have her breeder to keep me motivated to the best mom to her. She requested that I update her periodically and e-mail pictures. It means a lot to me to be able to write her and say, "look how healthy and happy she is here with me". It's a pride thing, much like I imagine an adoptive mom would feel. Thanks again for all the great information.
