Please help! At night, we put Hunter and Layla in their crate to sleep. When we first got them, they were WONDERFUL about letting us know when they needed to potty, and we would take them out of the crate, place them on the potty pad, and let them go. We would do this several times a night when necessary. But for some reason in the past week or so, they have taken to peeing in the crate without bothering to wake us up, so when they wake us up in the morning, they and their crate are covered in pee!! I thought the whole point of crate training was that they didn't like to pee in their bed...these puppies don't seem to mind! All of their toys are drenched in pee also. I don't know what to do! They'll be ten weeks old on Friday and I wouldn't be opposed to taking them to a potty training class, but other than this they seem to be learning and advancing very well. Any suggestions???

I think it happens on occasion. But I also think that sometimes if they have to go, they have to go. If they are 10 weeks old, the LONGEST they should be able to physically hold it is 4 hours. But since this is over night, my suggestion is to take water away from them a couple (or few) hours before you put them to bed, and also, be sure to get them to go before you crate them for the night. That's what I did when Oliver was a pup, and if I recall, that seemed to work really well.

Hope that helps!
I'd remove the bed until they've been accident free for at least a month - and no stuffed toys so you don't have to wash them. Just throw in one or two chew toys. I take up the water 2 hours before bedtime, and he's usually pretty good about going after the water's up, so he's able to hold it all night. He's almost 3 months old. I still don't have a permanent (nice) bed for him in the crate yet cause he's not fully potty trained. I just started putting a towel in about a week ago cause he hasn't had an accident in hte crate since the first week I got him. So maybe in another month or two if all goes well, I'll get him a nice comfy crate bed. =P Good luck and don't worry - corgis learn fast!!! Just watch the water intake before bedtime!!!! and a Hydrogen Peroxide solution is good for sanitizing all those toys!
At ten weeks old, they're too young to hold it through the night. remove the water dish 2 hours before bedtime, don't let them have free access to food all day. If problem persist, check with your vet and see if it's UTI.
I know some people would probably disagree with me, but I put a potty pad in the crate with Ginny when she was a baby. One end of the crate had an old towel folded up for her to sleep on (easy to wash) and the other end had a potty pad that had adhesive on one side of it so I could stick it to the floor of the crate. It's a pretty decent sized crate. I also tried to not give her water after about 8pm and take her potty one last time before bed. It worked well because she would go on her potty pad and then the crate wasn't covered in pee in the morning. As she got older, I noticed the potty pad would be dry more frequently, so I stopped putting it in with her. She is now 5 months old and hasn't had an accident overnight in a long time. I'm sure some people think it will encourage them to go in their crate, but I think it is more like having a diaper on a baby. They just can't hold it that long yet. When you notice that they aren't wetting it, then you start to take it out. It sure saves you from having to clean up a big mess in the morning and having pee-covered pups!
For the first month or two that we had Triley, we would set an alarm and wake up at least once during the night to take him outside to pee (usually he was left 3-4 hours). We didn't wait for him to tell us that he had to go out - at such a young age we didn't trust him to know when he had to go. We slowly increased the time that he was left in the crate (4 hours, then 5 and so on), and eventually he figured out to wake us up when he had to go, if we hadn't taken him out already. It worked great. Now he sleeps on our bed but every morning between 6 and 7 he comes over to my side of the bed and groans (and prances, like a toddler that really has to pee!) until I wake up and take him out.
That is interesting, since puppies usually don't like to go potty where they sleep. You may be having the problem by keeping them both in one crate. It's a pee war! One of them pees a little, and the other one says "OK, I will too." I would get each of them their own crate. You can keep them close together, but each will have its own space.

Also they probably do need to go somewhere between 4-6 hours after going to bed. (Charlie slept about 6 hours before waking me up to pee when I got him at 10.5 weeks.) Separate sleeping quarters may solve your problem. If not, you might try setting an alarm clock (as Nancy suggested) with soft music about 5 hours after you go to bed and take them out even if they don't wake you up. If they have peed with 5 hours, then set the alarm at 4 hours and work up. You should be able to set a little longer time line every few days.

My instincts keep going back to separating their sleeping spots to solve the problem, as a first attempt at a fix.

Also, do follow other's advice...no more water 2 hours before bedtime.

Keep us posted on your progress!
I was wondering if keeping them together may be part of the problem. We have a 36" crate and figured we would keep them both in there for now and then buy another one when they get bigger and need the extra space. The crate did come with a divider so I will try using that for a few nights and see if it makes a difference. If not I guess we'll have to go ahead and spring for another one! These other suggestions sound great too - I'll let everyone know how it goes!
I thought about suggesting a divider if you had one. However if one pup pees, the pee will seep across the entire floor of the crate even with the divider. Since you do have the divider though, I would use it. It will at least provide a bit of transition time for them to get used to not sleeping "on top" of each other. It might even help the pee problem.
Yes, and I also have two little beds that will fit in the divided sections of the crate, which would keep the pee from seeping. We'll try that tonight and see if it works!!
Thanks for the advice everyone! Last night we used the divider to partition the crate and put their beds in the separate sides, let them pee around 2 am, 6:30am, and when it was time to get up for the day at 7:30. And no one had an accident in the crate!!! I was so proud! =)
That's great news! One night without having to disinfect everything in the morning. Hooray! Hopefully they'll continue to wait until you get them out to potty. : - )
