I have picked out my puppy who is 4 weeks old right now. The breeder told me this is the mothers 3rd litter and the pups are usually weaned by 6 weeks and idependent. He said that I would be able to take it home then if she was ready but I'm not so sure. I'm thinking it's better for her socially and emotionally if she stays until 8 weeks. What do you think? I would love to take her home as I can't wait to finally have her but I will do what's best for her. Thanks ahead!

*laughs* I had a English-American mix Cocker Spaniel named Frodo when I was a child. Frodo of the Four Paws. He was a good dog.

Your Frodo is adorable too. I love brindle dogs.
Thank you, Emily!

That is an awesome picture.
Hi Dawn,
I would suggust waiting until your puppy is eight weeks.Tthe longer she is with her littermates and dam the more socialzation she will have. Not one of the breeders i bought my dogs from,or the ones i talked to would even consider letting a puppy go before 8-10 weeks.I actually didn't get Tucker until he was almost three months old.Improper socialization can cause alot of problems for your puppy and you as well, everything from seperation anxiety to aggression.if your still not sure what to do ask the vet that will be doing your required health check what his/her opinion is.or even get the name of your local dog trainer, because with a corgi you're definetly going to need classes or she'll be ruling you, what they think.i mean this is only my opinion but my boys are healthy, active and really well socialized and alot of that is due to the wonderful breeders that i deal with!!!

I'd wait until MINIMUM 8 weeks. I know a lot of experts recommend 10 wks, but I read a bunch of books before we picked up our pup and it seems between 6 and 8 weeks the puppy needs to be near its mom and littermates to avoid some possible future behavior issues (socialization, etc.). I got my pup from a quality breeder and they wouldn't even let us pick him up before 8 weeks. So, I'd wait another couple weeks, but I couldn't wait a whole month to get him.

Also, here's a tip that we used (we picked up our pup from a breeder 2 states away): when we picked him up, we brought along empty water bottles and asked the breeder to let us fill them up at her house (the water the puppies had been drinking). That way we transitioned him to our tap water over the next few days. For some pups this may be unnecessary, but our Taylor had (and still has) a sensitive tummy.

Good luck!
Thanks for the tip. I never thought about the tap water transition. My pup is coming from about 20 miles away so I doubt there's a huge difference in our water. And I will be waiting to get her!
Our breeder told us she would let us take our puppies at 6 weeks. We got them at 7 weeks just because we had to go to another state and that fit with our schedule. It was okay getting them at 7 weeks, and like I said it was quite a trip to get them so that was what worked, but I think if they had been closer I would have liked to have waited until 8. I mean it was awesome to get to see them still growing and that young, and they had been weaned since 4 1/2 weeks - their mom didn't want anything to do with them after that, poor things! - but 8 weeks is probably a better bet. Also since we got two I wasn't so concerned about the socialization they would miss out on. But with one you should probably leave it with the litter a little longer.
Wow! You got two pups at one time? I guess that makes sense to get all the puppyness out of the way at once. Our corgi is almost 1.5 yrs old now and I want to get a second pup, but I'm hesitant when I remember all the long hours of potty training and deworming and on and on.
Yeah now that we're knee-deep in puppiness, I'm so glad we're getting it all out of the way at once!!!
I see you made the decision to wait, oh, 2 weeks ago, but I wanted to reply and say you made the best choice and gave your puppy the best gift you could give her by waiting.

Our breeder (whom I will never, ever, EVER refer anyone to) gave us the whole, 'Mom gets annoyed with her puppies after 5 weeks,' when in reality, she may be annoyed, but by showing this she is teaching the puppies.

We ended up bringing her home 2 days before she turned 6 weeks, which was also 2 days before Christmas. This lady obviously just wanted her money. Its sickening really. I was in the 'honeymoon' phase of this puppy-love and went along with it. I feel like I ruined my dog's life by not waiting, although to this day I'm not sure the breeder would have let me wait. I thought she was legitimate, but she has no idea and/or doesn't care what she's doing.

Sorry for the rant. :]

I love my Emma, but I will be the first to say she is quite the terror. She bites all the time. Almost every time I pet her she goes for my hand, and when I try to grab her collar to put her leash on, or try to pick her up, its worse. She goes into this crazy exorcist behavior, growling, biting, crazy eye, bearing her teeth, barking, face-nipping (rarely). I love her so much, and we have her in the intermediate PetSmart class (already took puppy class there, too) and we've tried the spray bottle, and endless other things. Now I'm not saying every Corgi will be like this, but you are saving yourself a lot of grief, time, and money by waiting. I am now going to have to hire a private dog behavior specialist if she doesn't change after she's finished teething and has her spay. Luckily, she is still extremely smart. She's always the youngest in her class, and the first to catch on (with the exception of her evilness. Poor girl.)

I love her so much and I just want her to be happy, and she obviously isn't happy. I have never had a dog who has behaved in this way. She absolutely hates cuddling too. She will head-butt me in the face (leaving bruises on my chin) so I will leave her alone. Its heartbreaking.

I learned my lesson. I will never, ever get another puppy before 10 weeks. I will however, add another corgi to my family someday. She has definitely not ruined the experience or breed for me, my poor girl is just confused :[

Congratulations on your puppy, and best of luck!
Hi Angela. Emma is positively gorgeous, what a little cuttie! I'm sorry to hear she's such a little terror. She's lucky to have a mummy so patient and loving, I'm sure she'll learn her proper behavior in no time and make you proud (lets pray she does anyway!!) I have two children ages 9 and 5 so I will not put up with any aggression from my pup. Her parents were both super sweet and loving and good with my kids so I'm feeling confident she will have a lovely personality as well. Well, good luck to you and Emma. Hang in there!! Oh, my breeder has also told me that the mother only goes in with the pups twice a day (trying to convince me to just take her I guess) but I figured that was at least twice a day that she's learning from mom and she's still with the other pups the whole day. Oh well...he'll just have to deal with it for another week!
Angela, I'm concerned that you're in Intermediate and still don't have some control over the aggressiveness. If you want to talk and brainstorm on some ideas to get her under control, drop me an email.
