3 year-old Tod won't jump on sofa/chairs since yesterday ... Input, plz
I've searched and came up with nothing that fits. Hopefully someone has experienced something similar.
Our 3 year-old Pembroke boy is allowed on beds/sofas/chairs ... We don't mind. Leather furniture = easy clean up. Tod is not overweight, but very athletic. That's why his behavior made us cautious.
Yesterday he jumped onto sofas with difficulty. Would not do his 'stand' trick. Today he'd come up to a sofa and look at me for help.
At the same time Tod has great appetite, normal stool, will run after his tennis ball, come when called. Nothing out of the ordinary ... yet his refusal to jump on sofas is strange.
Oh, I feel I should add this. The night before my 11-year-old was playing chase with Tod. Tod was jumping on and off the sofa multiple times. She exercised him well, for he was panting afterwards for good half hour.

Could he have hurt himself or overdone the exercise? When Livvy has a day that she runs not stop after balls the next day she can be stiff and sore due to over doing it.

I have one that will not jump on furniture if she's overdone it (swimming, dog park, etc). I think she just gets sore all over, since she doesn't limp noticeably but does move "short" when this happens (not striding out as easily). Usually after a day she's fine.
I'd say if no improvement in about two days to call the vet.

My Luna has done this before for a variety of reasons. Tendon strains, sprains and even a break. All from just having too much of a good time. At the vets we check toes and legs - will Tod let you touch his feet and legs? Do you notice any changes when you do? Take your thumb and forefinger and feel firmly, but not hard! down along the sides of his spine from his collar to his tail (oops - i've got cardi's....) and look for any reaction - head turns, yelp, putting butt down. Check the tongue for dark color - like a purple. Look for excessive panting.
You can always call your vet with what you've observed after your check out of Tod - make the decision from there. Crate rest for a few days can do wonders for strains.....

Noodles did this just a few months ago. I came home at lunch to make sure he was okay and other than not jumping up on the couch, he was fine. I only walked with him for a short distance that night because if something was wrong, I didn't want to make it worse. He did everything else normal, but if he wanted up on the couch, he would sit on the floor and look at me to have him pick him up (oh, and he would go down or upstairs very slowly also). The following day, he was back to his normal self. He raced down the steps first thing in the morning, was jumping on the couch and actually jogged with me. I have not a clue what was wrong the day before, but he was fine after that one day. He hasn't had any troubles since.

The panting for half an hour was most probably a response to pain he was experiencing, not because he had been well exercised and was tired. The kind of play you describe between the dog and your 11 yr. old may look like fun, but is not a good idea. I would encourage a more cooperative type of interaction between the two, such as teaching the dog some safe tricks where he can get a treat as a reward.

Thanks all for the input. Tod made me so happy today - when my daughter let him into my room in the morning he jumped right onto my bed to tell me "Good Morning, Mommy!" (and it's pretty high up from the floor). Good sign. I am so relieved.....

Back to square #1 ... Looks like Tod's back to avoiding the stairs. Last night he didn't even get out of his crate to 'remind' me about his dinner. Yet, once I put the food down he ate it as usual. Time to call the vet.

Came back from the vet. Turns out Tod hurt his lower back (slipped a disk), and he is on anti-inflammatory Rimadyl and Tramadol for pain. Three weeks of absolutely no hard activities. Tod was very good as usual when handled by the vet. Our family is so relieved! :)
