I tried to do a search, but maybe it's my browser or the site but couldn't find anything...

Any who, my Pembroke Corgi Kit is a bit overweight. He's hovering around 37-38 pounds. I've read they should be around 30 pounds and I've seen one at that weight level at the dog park and I understand now what they mean by an hour glass figure.

I'm feeding Kit 1/3 a cup of Orijin for breakfast and dinner, so 2/3 a cup per day. With minimum amounts of treats, perhaps a couple of those Charlie Bear 3 calorie treats when I leave for work and when I lure him upstairs for the night.

I used to feed him 1/2 a cup twice a day and spoil him with treats, but have been on the above routine for about two weeks right now without ANY change in weight.

We also go to the dog park on a daily basis, spend about an hour there on the weekdays and about 3 hours on the weekends. He runs around and plays and seems to getting a bit faster... but no change in weight.

So what do I do know to get his weight down? What are the best ways to drop that extra 7-8 pounds?

I'm including some videos and pictures to show how he's looking now. He doesn't look fat, but he doesn't look skinny either...

Thanks,

oops, meant the pictures to appear in the thread...

I completely understand where you are coming from. Noodles weighs in at 40 pounds (of course he stands almost 15 inches tall) and he is a big boy. He had a thyroid test done to see if his thyroid wasn't working properly, but that came back fine. He doesn't eat that much, so I completely switched dog food on him. He now eats a low fat lamb and rice mixture (dry) that he loves. He gets a half a cup (the small yogurt size cup) for breakfast and then a quarter of that with green beans for dinner. He has been on this for a year now and is now down to 40 pounds. I know, I know, that is still a lot, but we are making great progress. He has a cute waist now and I'm hoping he will lose another 5 pounds. His doctor is very pleased with the way he looks right now. I will say he has more energy to keep jogging with me and we go jogging twice a day and he plays every day with his friends. Noodles doctor isn't quite sure why Noodles weight is up there, but he seems very pleased with where Noodles is at right now and has told me to keep doing what we are doing. It took about 3 months before I noticed the weight coming off of Noodles, so don't get discouraged.
heh, guess like with people... it just takes some time... i'll keep at it. Do you think 1/3 a cup twice a day is enough for the lil guy?
I know it doesn't sound like much, but his doctor said that was a good amount to be feeding him. I believe my mouth dropped open when he said that because I couldn't believe that was a good amount. I still feel like I'm starving him, so I give him a lot of green beans. Noodles like frozen green beans zapped in the microwave for a bit. He isn't thrilled with canned green beans (no salt added), so I don't get those for him. He also likes frozen peas from time to time and baby carrots. I have to cut up the baby carrots or else he just plays with them. Yup, just like a little kid playing with their food. Time is the most important thing. Many of Noodles friends are on the green bean diet (that is what we like to call it) and everyone is losing weight! :)
Mine plays with carrots too! im still finding chunks of carrots behind things. We moved the couch to clean under it and there were a whole handful of dried up carrots under there.
Cody weighs in at 35.5 pounds, he is a chunk for sure. He used to get a cup a day of dog food but now gets half a cup, much to his dismay! He also gets green beans or pumpkin mixed in with his food to keep his tummy a little fuller. We exercise about two hours a day but he is still a chunk. He's been on his diet for 2 months. Give it some time, Cody has dropped about 5.5 lbs these past couple of months, I think if you give Kit sometime you will see progress also! P.S. I love the last picture!
thank you :D

Hopefully i'm feeding the lil guy enough... or am i still giving him too much? I'm just doing kibble, not really mixing any veggies or anything like that... should i?
Depends on what your vet says. Ask them how much they think you should be feeding your dog. I would also ask about veggies. Mine recommends veggies because I had a problem with Cody going outside finding things he shouldnt eat, we live on a ranch so that included cow poop, chicken eggs, and even horse grain. The veggies help fill him up and keep him out of the bad stuff.
He is a cutie! Unfortunately (for me,Lol) weight takes longer to drop off than it does to go on. Regular walks as well as the dog park will help but the reality is that dogs have different metabolisms just like us. If you do not see results after a couple months I would cut back a little more on kibble. Green beans are a great filler.
We had Jack down to 2/3 of a cup a day over 2 feedings, and he would get even less than that if we were doing lots of training and he had treats. It took forever for him to lose, but getting a second dog seemed to help (though that wasn't the reason we got her) and then he got too skinny on me; at 33 or 34 pounds, you can see his ribs. So about 35 or 36 pounds is ideal for him, and he's now up to a cup and a quarter a day. It seems once he reached a certain threshold he kept losing; we bumped him to a cup and he still lost on that. I think the metabolism might change once they get down to a certain weight.

He's a big Corgi. We did mix in pumpkin, green beans, or low-fat yogurt, and the food we use is under 400 cal/cup.

Good luck! Unless he's morbidly obese (which I don't think he is) I would aim to lose only a pound or so per month.
Thanks, i'll try to get some veggies for him so he stops eating EVERYTHING he finds on the ground... including wood :[
Hello - my 1 year old PWC also eats lots of things off the ground in the backyard, including twigs, buds etc. that fall of our trees - I am forever picking things up off the ground, but she keeps finding stuff to munch on; much to my dismay. I keep a Chuck-it! in the backyard as a diversionary tactic, which works most of the time!
