Another Weight Question
Hi guys,
Sorry for posting so much. Being a new corgi owner, I seem to be freaking out about a lot of things. But I decided to weight Dusty today since I wanted to know how much I should feed him. We were using an electronic scale, which takes 2 seconds to calculate his weight or else it will come up in an error. His weight came up to be 24.5 pounds, which freaked me out since he is only 6 months. However, I am still able to feel his ribs, and I don't think he looks fat. I have attached some pictures in order to get some feedback.
I might just need to get a different scale that is mechanical and not electronic (making him sit still is really difficult) just to confirm. But any feedback on the forums would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am thinking you need a new scale. How tall is Dusty at the shoulders and how long withers to tail? 24.5 #'s is the weight for almost a full grown dog(my Livvy is that) and so I don't believe this can be correct but I don't know. He looks well proportioned!

Thanks for the comments! I thought he was well proportioned too, but I really couldn't compare. When I saw 24.5, I just started freaking out since I know that is what a full grown pup is suppose to weigh.
I unfortunately don't have a measuring tape, but I will try to borrow one tomorrow and get back to you. Maybe he has already fully grown.

He does not look fat at all to me. Sidney is 29 pounds at age 2 1/2...but I think he was around 23 pounds when he was 6 months old. Try a different scale.

Oh, he's so cute! I'll be the meany here: If he were my dog, I'd bring him down a few pounds in weight (or to be more exact, I'd maintain the weight he's at as he puts on a little size) He's not fat, but he's got some pudge. It's hard at this age to keep a good weight, because they are still growing and one day they are growing fast and look lanky, and the next thing you know they hit a pause in growth and start to grow sideways instead!
When you look at him from above, you should see a very distinctly smaller waist, compared to his chest and his hips. And from the side, you should see just a hint of the hip bone. Dusty's figure looks appropriate for a younger puppy, say around 4 months (when they are growing super-fast, a bit of pudge is fine), but by 6 months you want to slowly see him start to take on his adult figure.

try carry Dusty and step on the scale first, then a second time just by yourself, now you know how much he weights :)

That's how I do it with Finn. I weight myself (usually 3 times so i can get an average) then I pick him up and weigh us both (again 3 times) and I subtract my weight from our combined weight and voila, I have Finn's weight.
I think the same thing happened with Finn. He was growing appropriately then he stopped and began to grow a bit pudgy, then went back to growing a little more. He was so small compared to my Mom's Cardi I assumed he was still growing and didn't cut his food, but from 8 months to 1 year he barely grew anymore in size. I think he's a bit on the small side for a male Cardi and my Mom's is on the large side for a male Cardi. Put the two together and we have a normal size Cardigan. :)

So I just did this, and looks like Dusty is 26.5 pounds. uugggh. Well it is just time to feed him less.

Edison reached 24 lbs by the time he was 7-8 months old. Some just grow more quickly than others. He doesn't look fat, but check from above- you should see a waist just below the ribcage. :)

hmm.. what do you mean by a waist? below the ribcage, should it concave inward? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I just want to clarify. :)
