Hi everyone,

I just adopted my first Corgi mix on Saturday and I'm looking for general advice about Corgis as well as a specific question I have.

I've had dogs all my life, so I know about general care, but I'm curious if there are any things about Corgis that differ from other dogs when it comes to training, socialization, etc.

Also, she started barking this morning on my way out the door to work and I was curious if anyone had advice as to how to get her to stop. I live in an apartment complex and I don't want to disrupt my neighbors. I take her for a walk every morning as well as play with her while I'm getting ready for work, but that doesn't seem to be working as far as distracting her when I leave.

Thanks so much - in advance - for your responses! I look forward to hearing more about Corgi care.

I give mine a Kong with a little cheese smeared around in it before I leave. It helps them focus on something pleasurable when I leave and settle down. My dogs love it when I leave! Lol!
What's a Kong?

Other sizes do exist!
OMG Sam, that's hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!
Hahahaha! That's hilarious!!!! I've seen those at pet stores before, but never knew what they were called!
I leave the TV on, and mine also get kongs with some peanut butter on the inside. You can get them at pretty much any pet store, or even walmart (I think they have an off-brand but it should be almost the same thing). Is she crated when you're gone?
Thanks so much for all the advice, everyone! This is helping a lot! I'm going to buy one of those Kong things today. :D
Sam, Archie wants to know where he can get one of those lol x
Corgis are herding dogs, so when you leave, she feels like she needs to do what she can to keep the herd together...LOL. Cody does the same thing. He sleeps in a crate, so when I leave he gets a small treat, goes in his crate, and takes a nap. Generally, he does not bark much but he really wants to keep everyone within his sights.
Here is a funny site describing Corgis: http://www.goldengatecorgis.org/articles/truth_article.htm I love the part about the "Turbo Frap". Cody does laps around the couch when the "frap" hits him.
Cody is for sure a dog that wants to please, is intelligent, and learns quickly. Corgis are "food motivated", but be careful. They gain weight easily and it's hard to get it off. It's terrible on their long backs to be heavy. I walk Cody 2 times a day...good for us both and it helps use up some of his excess energy!!
Wishing you all the best. Corgis are fantastic dogs! ~April
