Anybody get a Pem from Cypress Farms???

I looking at rescuing a Pem Male who was bred by Jan at Cypress Farms Corgis.

I don't know this breeder but I'm looking avoid a puppy who has DM is it's blood line.

My 10-1/2 year old Pem has DM and we're doing everything to keep him going.

So, you can see why I'm hesitant to get a new puppy without knowing if he's got the potential for having DM.

This is strange. Cypress Farms appears to belong to both the regional club (Golden Gate PWC Club) and the national PWCCA. It is strange that one of the dogs supposedly bred by her should be in a "rescue" situation. Have you found out the previous owner's ID or the registered name of the dog and spoken with the breeder? If it were me, I would want to know that one of the puppies I bred is now up for rescue...

I think we posted at the same time! I was asking a similar question. If a dog of hers is in rescue she definitely would want it back.

Hi, I'm afraid I'm a little confused by your question. You say you are looking to "rescue" a male pem. Usually we use rescue when we mean get a dog from a shelter or private rescue, in which case no one would know where the dog came from.

Are you looking at buying a puppy from her? Or adopting an older dog from her? Or did you find a dog through a website or referral who someone is looking to rehome, who said it came from there?

If indeed a dog of hers is in rescue, then she should be contacted; per the breed club, I am sure that she wants back any dogs she's sold or adopted out who cannot stay in their current homes.

If you are getting a dog directly from her, then you can ask about DM status and tell her your story. The majority of Pems are DM "At Risk" though most will never come down with the disease. Please do keep in mind that being DM carrier or clear does not prevent a dog from getting IVDD, which generally strikes at a much younger age and can be (from my understanding) painful.

I am sorry to hear about your current dog and best of luck with keeping him happy as long as possible.

Are you getting this puppy from the breeder? I agree with others that have posted that breeders would want the puppy back to re home. My first Corgi Rusty was 12 when he died of DM and it was so heart wrenching so I can relate. Most breeders now have their dogs tested for the gene I believe. I see you live in my same city by chance what vet do you see?
