Anyone else's dog do this?
Everytime I come home, if I have something with me that he doesn't regularly encounter (a bag for a trip, shopping bag etc.), Atlas feels the need to go through the bag and all its possessions, shoving his nose in everything. I once found him all the way inside my backpack with just his rear legs sticking out. The other day I had to keep him out of a bag that had nothing but my xbox in it, and Meg can come home with shopping bags full of clothes and he will "inspect" all of them.

My Maggie does this with the groceries. I have to be careful because I caught her running off with a package of hot dogs. Silly dog.
I would say this is a smart dog. If she also took the buns she would be a genius.
oh yeah, Mocha loves the gym clothes smell from my duffle bag, one time he helped himself with my leftover subway sandwich from lunch.
LOL! I got the most hilarious picture from your post! Atlas sounds adorable haha. Loki will inspect things, situations, and people. If I go into another room, a short while later he has to go and see what I'm up to. If he sees something foreign in the apartment he has to go and inspect it and usually barooooo at it haha.
Sparty does the same thing! They should use them at the airport.
It takes too long to get through the line as it is. LOL. The way Corgis are so thorough in the inspections it would take forever.
oh yeah ein does this but he focuses on our jeans and shoes. anytime we leave he has to come over and sniff us like crazy when we come back home. we always think he's saying "ok, where did you go? who were you with? were there other dogs there? there better not have been!" he does this even when my hubby goes to pick up take out. lol. he's only gone for 10 minutes and ein feels the need to find out where he really went.

maybe atlas should get into bag sniffing at the airport :)
I thought Maggie was the only dog that did that....bags of groceries, bags from Wal-mart.....it doesn't matter, if I place them on the floor she will go thru' every one of them......and, if there happens to be something in one of those bags she likes, she will lay down next to it and guard it from the other dogs. If one of the other dogs just happens by, she will growl to let them know that is "her" bag. If I bring a large bag of dog food (I buy the 33-35 lbs. bags) in the house, she will guard it also. It's just too funny! Also, if I leave my backpack/purse where she can reach it....she will go thru' it; she's even stolen whole packs of gum out of my purse, eaten the gum and then I have to induce vomiting, but that's a whole other story.
Zinfindel is jsut like your Maggie...though i never put my purse down at his level so nothing like the gum thing has happened with him!!!! ...Payton will attempt to sniff but Zin doesn't usually allow him too....Lexus could careless unless there are bananas in the bag. for some weird reason she LOVES bananas. Then she'll out rank Zin and guard that bag.
My guys have to smell every new thing that comes through the door. If I put anything down they would take off with stuff. I think they are checking to see if I am smuggling pig ears in and not telling them.
Oh yes.....Duncan has to inspect every bag that comes through the door. A lot of times when I buy him a new toy, I'll tie the top of the bag loosely, and he has to get it out of the bag himself. So, I'm to blame for that habit he has. Now, every bag has something in it for him, and he has to look to make sure when I say there's no toys.
All three of my dogs come right away to sniff at the bags I bring in! And I swear PetCo must infuse their bags with something that smells delicious to dogs because they get especially excited when I come home with a PetCo bag, even if all it has is fish food or reptisand!
