Hi everyone,

I couldn't find a discussion about this, but I apologize if it's been covered elsewhere.  I understand that corgis are a barking breed.  I usually see this referred to in terms of them being "alert dogs" and "talkers".  Both of those imply some kind of active communication to the owner.  I am wondering if anyone has a good sense of how much noise their corgis make when the owners aren't home (and there is no one in particular to "alert" or "talk" to).

Thanks!

Actually we do pay attention to this because we travel in a motor home most of the summer and really can't have dogs barking when we are gone. I find that the less noise they hear outside and as long as they can't see things they rarely bark when we are not home. However, I do close the blinds and turn on the radio to make it less likely that they will be attracted to things outside. If Izzy sees someone outside she will bark otherwise she is pretty quiet. My previous corgi, Sparty barked if someone came to the door.

I have been told by my room mates current and past that my Kota doesn't bark when I'm not home and he stays in my room mostly. I leave the door open for him to go in and out of my room as he pleases. That's where I keep his food and water.

Mine still alert bark if we're not home. They don't do it excessively, but say if the Fedex guy came to the door they will definitely bark.

I don't think mine bark at all when I'm gone.  Jackson will bark at us when we leave, and Seanna is in the window when we come home and will get up and bark when she sees us, but the few times I've snuck home they haven't been barking.

I've asked my neighbors and Wyatt is as quiet as a church mouse while we're gone. He play barks at us when we're home and barks if he hears anything loud outside. Also, if we put him in his crate for a time-out he will definitely protest.

I've watched Kaylee on a webcam during the day when she's alone. I've never noticed her barking. She mostly just sleeps. I also haven't received any comments or complaints from my neighbors.

Not saying she doesn't bark when alone, I just don't think it's that common. Perhaps she's still too young and hasn't found her voice.

I don't think ours do alert barking when they are crated.  That's one reason we long ago decided to leave the crate doors open while we're gone, once they were old enough and we felt they would not get into trouble.  Just make sure they can't get into the garbage, etc.
