Just a reminder how important it is to have Benadryl around. On Tuesday we had a stray kitten show up. Wednesday he went to the vet for treatments and all his shots. Wednesday night kitty didn't look good. Called the vet who said he was having an allergic reaction to "something".so since I only had tabs(which is the perfect amount for a grown Corgi...I had to cut this into 8ths and added a bit of water and gave it to him. I really though he might die:( Thank goodness it helped and my kitty who found me is doing great! This works for bee bites and other reactions too. It's a good thing to have in your medicine cupboard!

Cute kitty!!  Are you going to keep him?  I've had to give mine Benadryl a couple of times...agree- it's a good drug to have on hand!

My husband says people drop off animals because they know I'll keep them. I believe this cat was maybe born in our grove. YES...I will keep him:)

Matching critters!!!  When we first met Arnold at the rescue we knew he was meant for us.  Our Bubba (cat) was red/white with a white patch on his butt.  Arnie was a red/white Pem and had a white patch on his butt.  Twins from different mothers.  Has he found a home with you?

I've used Benadryl for my dogs but never for a cat.  I know a lot of human meds that you can use for dog are deadly for cats and I just never thought about using Benadryl.  Very good to know!

I didn't know about Benadryl for cats either...glad I do know and I should probably write down the amount for his weight so I can figure it out if it ever happens again...funny how animals come into our lives...I always planned on adopting a Kitty I wanted next time...guess it won't be happening soon! My husband just shakes his head as he knows if a stray shows up it will have a home!

I agree.  I have had to give my corgis them several times because they love to chase wasps.  Their little faces were so swollen, they looked so sad.  The  Benadryl really helps!

Little orange friend!!!!

Jane...what is the amount per weight for cats?  Is there a table posted someplace?  I know what it is for the dogs but would like to have it on hand for the cats.

Whenever one of our cats crosses the Rainbow Bridge we know that sooner or later one will show up at the door.  There is an invisible sign that goes on "Vacancy".  For some reason we are destined to always have 3 cats.  Bless my husband, his attitude is "what's four more feet".

I get very mad at people who think it's ok for cats to run free.  My daughter hit a cat today, she was an absolute mess when she called us.  She wrapped the poor kitty in a towel she had in the car, tried to take it to the closest vet but they were closed.  She took it to the emergency vet...poor thing, one of it's eyes was half out of the socket.  In order to avoid any fees she had to sign the cat over to them..they did check for a chip, none.  They did tell he was badly hurt and they would most likely have to put him down.  Because some people think cats can fend for themselves this poor cat is dead and a person who loves animals to distraction is hurting so bad because of it.  Sorry...letting cats run free is a big issue with me.  Mine don't...that's why they live to 18-19 years.

I really don't know, I gave an 1/8th of a tab for a 3#7oz cat. I think I would call the vet and ask them for the amount of the children's liquid. I felt comfortable with the tab as I do this all the time at work but dividing the small tab was quite the feat as some pieces were a bit bigger than others but it worked when I needed it to.

I have 2 house cats and the oldest is 14 although he does go in and out but after dark he is close to the house and can get into our shed. I also have 5 Humane Society cats that the head person asked if I'd take as they (all 43 of them) were spayed/neutered and shots for free. They now live in our brooder house with a BIG outside fence to get fresh air. I agree that cats running free are not a good thing:( Here in farm country we have so many feral cats and it's sooooooo sad.

So sorry for your daughter what a good person to take the poor cat to the vet at least it was taken care of and didn't suffer too long...I've only hit coons that have run right out in front of me at night and on rare occasion a bird. I'm the kind of person to stop and help a turtle across the road so to hit something does not feel good but it does happen....unfortunately.

Jane....I did some research on Benadryl for cats and dosage.  Here's a link to a site that gives a good explanation of it.  It gives a lot of good info...now I know I could never give it to Gemma, she has glaucoma.  Poor kitty developed it at age 4.

I hit a cat many years ago.  Actually I was stopped at a stop sign and just as I started moving it ran out from under the parked car that was next to me.  Horrible horrible feeling, I still think about it when I pass the spot and it was many years ago.

Thanks Linda...I always have to laugh at my vet because he just not only rattles off the dosage but also the math that goes with it...all I want is the amount:) I guess it's a good thing but although I don't mind math I don't do it much anymore like he has to.

I'm always afraid of hitting deer as we have so many around and many times they can be in the middle of the road:(

Not that people should routinely treat their own pets without vet advice, but in a pinch you can access the Merck Veterinary Manual on line-FYI. I am a former vet tech and now a human healthcare provider, and I have used it for pets many times. Sometimes, your vet is unavailable, so research the medication dosages in a trusted resource. Hope this helps.

I hear you on the deer!  I live in the foothills of the Catskill mountains in NY...there are more deer here now then there was when Henry Hudson sailed up the Hudson River.  My husband had his truck totalled by one and just barely missed another when he goes to work at 4:30 in the morning.
