Bingley's strange behavior
Bingley doesn't like to be taken on walks anymore. While on leash, he pulls back, jumps and struggles to slip his collar, and finally just gives up and sits/lays down on the ground.
If we are on my street, he pulls very hard to get back to the house. Once he slipped his collar and took off for home and went right up the driveway to the front door.
However, if we are walking with other people and their dogs, he isn't too bad. He'll keep up but he will still pull back and lay down. He is nearly 2 years old, plays well with other dogs especially off leash at our local dog park. On leash, he's a mess.

Could something be hurting him to walk? Or did something scare him while out on a walk?

I thought he might be in pain, but he plays hard with other dogs at the dog park and is fine afterwards. I do think he may have been frightened by some utility/dump trucks that were working in our neighborhood. He doesn't really like to walk in any neighborhood though.

Is it only on walks or always when on leash? Any chance his collar is bothering him, or something scary happened on a previous walk? An obedience class might help him to be more comfortable on leash.

Only on walks. I do think some utility trucks scared him on a previous walk down our street. That might be it.

Sounds like a socialization problem (hard to tell without knowin more). If you've not taken him out very often and exposed him to lots of different environments and situations during his earlier months (between 3 and 18 months) that might be your answer. If this is not the case, has anything changed? Has it gotten real hot where you live? Did something scare him?

I think you are right when you ask if something scared him. There was construction in our neighborhood several months ago and I think a utility truck scared him. He has been socialized since about 6 months via puppy training classes and with going to our local dog park.
And he does seem to melt when it's really hot out.... I think you're right about that too.

Hello, Maya is 12 months this month. She is scary walking on her own. she will sit and cower when cars go by or people on bikes. When I walk her with other dogs she is much better. She does fine at the dog park and at the homes of friends. She is quite scrappy at home with her big sister. So I attribute the walking problem as fear. I take her out when I can on short walks by herself and me with lots of treats. I will let her sit and just watch the cars for a few minutes. I give her a treat when she does not cower. We walk and I talk to her encouragingly and when she walks with her tail flagged proper and her head up she gets lots of praise and treats. the only time she cowers and doesnt want to walk is up and down the busy streets with sights and sounds that she has not experienced before. She barks at anything new even at home. If I changed the room around or leave a bag where it wasn't before she has to bark and be excited. I am figuring that is her breed trait and that if I had gotten her a little earlier she might not be quite so scary excitable. But I will keep working with her and she will improve. I just have to remind myself to be patient. I am hoping that in a years time - she will be a very well rounded dog.

Bingley cowers when he hears loud noises. He is fearful of Petsmart even though we took training classes there. Rain and thunder scare him too. Sounds like Maya just needs some patience :)
