So, I'm thinking Ein is getting a tad bit chubby. Could just be her growing, but I'd hate for her to get fat. She's5 months old and at the last appointment she was 15lbs. She's gained weight since then, I think she's about 17lbs now. Anyways, we are currently feeding Orijen Regional Red and Evanger's Grain Free wet. I was doing about 1 cup of kibble and 2-3 tablespoons of the wet in her breakfast. Well, due to cost and maintaining her weight since we're fixing her soon we switched to Acana Grasslands. How much should she be eating in order for her to stay a healthy weight? How many calories should she be getting? Thank you.

So is she getting 2 cups/day now? It's hard to say exactly how much they should eat, but at her age I wouldn't worry about her getting chubby. Maybe when she's closer to a year old you might want to monitor her weight a bit closer, but she's still got a good bit of growing and filling out to do.

I believe my pem got 1.5 cups at that age. My cardigan on the other hand, was up to 2.5 cups for a while, and even then looked scrawny! So it really just depends on the dog.

We're only feeding 1 cup per day. Since thats what the Orijen bag said to feed. Lol.

Just my opinion, but that seems like a lot of food for a 17 pound dog, especially if you are giving treats too. Also, I'm not familiar with that brand of kibble, but if it has a lot of corn products in it, that tends to fatten dogs up. We feed Sophie a Wellness weight control kibble and she gets 1/4 cup 3x/day: in the morning, at dinner time and at night before bed. (She has a seizure disorder and we have found that keeping her blood sugar steady with three feedings works best for her; we have to keep her weight steady for the med. dosage.) We also give low calorie treats. She has a somewhat small frame and is about 23 pounds, but you can feel her ribs and see a waist when you look at her from the top. I seem to recall reading somewhere that dogs require about 30 calories per pound of body weight. Ask the vet --- the dog food bag feeding instructions are written by people trying to sell more dog food.

Orijen is very high protein and nutrient-dense, so I can see how a puppy might start getting chubby on it. I feed my 27lb 2-year-old a cup of the Orijen 6-fish everyday along with some Honest Kitchen. The 6-fish is surely lower calorie than the type you're feeding; you could try switching to that if you're concerned about her weight. Acana makes a Pacifica fish one too. But mostly I'd say just make sure she's active & getting a good amount of exercise because that food is high energy!

I'm feeding my 4.5 month old a 1/4 cup two times a day.  I usually put a table spoon of wet food or yougurt in with it.  She also get LOTS of training treats, but these are usually just her kibble.  I have little tupperware containers of it placed strategically all over the house so I can randomely treat her for whatever good behavior she throws at me.  She weighed 15 lbs last week and the vet said she was right on target.  Oh, and I'm feeding Fromms at the moment.
