Diagnosis: Auto Immune Mediated Inflammatory Disease

June 24, 2011 The vets diagnois is Auto Immune Mediated Inflammatory Disease.
Well, here we are two weeks after Lance's initial vet visit for a check on his ears that were bothering him, seeming to be an ear infection when shortly after that visit he developed ear Hematomas. The vet is still waiting for a few more results as the tests he ran, take a couple days to get all of the results back. With all the symptoms, Lance is presenting over the last two weeks with no relief, he really is pretty sure he has the auto immune mediated inflammatory disease. He got a shot of steriods at the vet today, and will start taking steriods in pill form starting tommorrow. Hopefully the steriod treatment will bring relief for once.
Seems a bit overwhelming dealing with such an issue, that seems to have come out of no where. The vet said he would call and check on how Lance was doing later tonight. Heres hoping that the vet bills don't go into overdrive, but of course wanting Lance to get well and stay well. What an emotional rollercoaster.

Thanks Susan!! So sorry to hear about your mom. Wow, that doesn't sound pleasant, of the brain, yikes. I lost my mom 9 years ago to non hodgkins lymphoma, so wish these diseases would disappear. I was hesitant about the steriods, cause like you said they do get such a bad rap, but the vet convinced me, this is what he needed. I just was hoping there was something else we could use instead. Yes, we are definately lookig for a miracle, thanks!!

Rubgy wasn't eating at all so he was put on a diet of boiled chicken and rice for the first week or so. Then he was put on prescription science diet for weight control. It didn't stop him from "puffing up" but it did moderate his weigh gain.
We really don't know how old Rugby is? We got him from a rescue and they thought he was maybe around 5 at the time. I think he's somewhere around maybe 8 or 9 now. He was first dianosed about three years ago.
Please make sure your vet moniters Tucker's vital organs while he's on the steriods. The roids are a double edge sword. They'll help him regain his strength but they can also do alot a damage if not kept in line.

Thanks for your feed back, I appreciate it. How often do you have to have Rugby checked now, is his gone now, or is it under control? Is this something that is chronic or just flare ups? i wonder how common this condition in dogs is, I know of 4 corgis now with this, since Lance has been diagnosed.

Rugby was getting checked every three months after he was first dianosed. His last three or four check ups were all in the low to normal range so now were taking him every six months. He seems to be under control. I really don't know about whether it's chronic or not. He has his good days and he has his bad but I'm not sure if that's just the way it would be if he didn't have this condition.

How long was Rugby on steriods for? Besides Rugby not eating, what other symptoms did he have, sores, etc?

Tha'ts where things got interesting. The vet who first treated Rugby had him on a steroid regiment for over a year with him gradually stepping down the dose as Rugby improved. Sorry my memory is a little vague as time goes by but I think he started off at 5 mg of predizone after the first major treatment of cortizone. If he relapsed they would up the doseage for awhile until he showed signs of improvement. Anyway it got to a point where he was only taking a quarter pill once a week. Well for whatever reason the original vet moved on. We were/ are going to Banfield. Rugby was/ is doing fine. We'll the new vet after we told her what the situation was almost threw a 'hissy fit'. She told us to take him off pred immediately. Well anyway we slowly took Rugby off the pred completely. Like I wrote before he's doing fine but were keeping an eye on him.
Rebecca Hello, It's definately effected his joints. There are days where you can see he's having a hard time walking but he really just muddles through. My heart just goes out to him when my other two are pulling me down the street while Rugby is trying his best to keep up!

Hello Tim
My Wrangler has AID also, he got it when he was five. How has this disease effected Rugby. It has attacked Wranglers joints. He has had to have plates put in his 2 front legs.
