Hi Robert, cut down 1/4 food portion, no other treats or peanut butter. Increase your daily outdoor on leash out door walk to 60-90 mins daily.
How much and what is he being fed now?

Outdoor activity and more of it. Dino went down from 45 lbs to 32. I cut down on the food and played until he could not stand it. Coco lost weight as well. I did get prescription diet but I think the vet just wanted me to buy their stuff. Treats are a part of daily life around here, but very little and mostly for training which is an on-going thing.

I fill in with green beans at dinner with 1/3 cup of kibble twice a day. Really you have to decrease the food and up the exercise in order to drop weight. Green beans are a great filler (frozen not canned).
I put my Toby on some Nutro Naturals for overweight and underactive dogs and wow did the trick he lost weight and running around like crazy playing more with Chevy and he just feels better period..But I keep both my boys on a Nutro Naturals food all the time anyways- no table food at all and give them few treats and walk them more-keep them active..
The best over the counter diet food is Nutro Natural Choice Lite. It is the lowest calorie dog food on the market and is just a tiny bit higher calorie than the veterinary prescribed brands. I've had 2 big dogs drop about 5-10 pounds on this food in the past with no change in the amount fed or increase in exercise. You could also stick to your own food and substitute 1/3-1/4 of his daily ration with a home cooked concoction. I make a green bean, peas, and broccoli mush with 1 egg and a TINY bit of cooked ground beef or chicken to add flavor. I cook it all up and put it in the blender for a bit and feed it as a portion of Franks morning and evening meal. Since there is basically no added calories or fat from the veggies he can still eat the same amount and has lost weight on that. You could probably put low sodium chicken broth or something like that to add flavor instead of the meat. I make a batch that lasts about 5 days. Its cheap, easy, and he thinks he is getting an amazing treat lol.
