Do you prefer using Collars or Harnesses with your Corgi?
I had always used a Harness when training Shorty, and he was a breeze to train to walk, heel, etc.
His collar was just to hold his tags.
My little 'Rowdy' is proving to be more challenging than my Shorty was.
I wondered what the majority of corgi owners used? I am starting Rowdy on leash training, he is 9 weeks old. I have been getting him used to a harness the last several days, and he is 'tolerating' it.
I guess I always felt subconsciously that the harness was better, but wondered what others thoughts are specifically with the Corgi?

*UPDATE*... sooooo, I put Rowdy in his 'beloved' Harness (note sarcasm...) last night and tried to put a leash on him for the first time. What a disaster.Aside from the frantic scratching and biting at the leash, him refusing to walk and just rolling on his back (cue to visual of me dragging him across carpet like I am pulling a sled... lol)... then him continuing to try and get out of his harness. AND him growling and throwing a fit. It was NOT a proud moment.
As much as I love puppies, I long for the days where he already knows how the world and all of its strange contraptions (ie: harness/leash) work.
Sooooo, I will try again tonight.... maybe I will just leave the harness on him for hours at a time for a few more days until he realized he cannot escape.
Times like these make me miss Shorty even more.
With Shorty, I put on the harness for the first time and he could care less. He tried to chew at it once or twice, but never fought it.
I literally took Shorty on one walk and he had the whole walking on a leash thing down pat!
I need prayers... lots of prayers... please!! lol

Thanks for all of the advice everyone. After buying a choke collar (the one that is half regular collar with a section of chain that tightens...) I finally have a puppy that will walk on a leash!!! Nevermind the three days of EXTREME protest and him screaming/whining bloody murder when we would be pulling him along to walk. Nevermind that we would not even be hardly moving and we were not hurting him in any manner.
well, I am already teaching him to heel, so pulling should not be a problem... ohhh, I better knock on some wood.

Done training? Anything you want :)
Years ago I did try a harness and I found it sets me back from training. I've fostered roughly 6 corgis this year so far and every time I see a harness I replace it with a collar immediately. It is just so much easier to handle.

What type of collar do you use? A choke collar or just a plain jane collar? I was always afraid they would slip out of the collar...
I did learn how to use a choke chain properly during puppy obedience training years ago...

For Mocha, I use a regular nylon buckle collar, he walks real good and does not pull, so a regular collar works for him. My girl vienna had a pulling problem and I used a Martingale collar, half nylon half chain. Now that they are both trained, I am waiting for a perfect leather rolled collar. Your collar should be large enough so that only 2 fingers can slip in. you may need to re-adjust every feel weeks.

I use a martingale collar because the obedience instructor suggested it for training but also said if you have slipping problems (darn thick necked dogs) that it helps for that too.
'lo. She was right. I use it and kennel leads now and it's been spiffy.
The kennel leads are also great because you don't have to buckle or clip anything. Slip on, slip off. Easy peasey.
They're also so cheap, I keep 1-2 in the car just in case. I've caught 2 stray dogs so far (the third I didn't have one so i used a clip lead with the clip looped through the eye to make a slip lead.
My animal control office gives them away, as does the vet.

We originally got a harness for Nellie, thinking that it would be more comfortable for her, but walks were pretty unsuccessful. After trying a few collars, we found one that works well right now. She is 3 months, and has been walking pretty well the past 2 weeks.

we use shoulder harness's on the corgi's and a full harness for the lab cody. when I'm training it is a plain choke or a martingale. choke's tend to offer the fastest results to me but I really don't like to go that far. I had a trainer say that once you fail with a aid you can't use it again (per specific dog) so if you fail with the choker & move to a prong, fail with that you move to a shock collar so on so forth. the point she was making was that if you don't like a specific aid your gonna have to make sure you don't reach the level where you have to move to that aid

Watch out for harnesses chafing on long walks. We have a harness, but it chafes sores on long hikes. Took me awhile to realize that. I use it only for safety/belay on log crossings etc.

We use a collar.
With a harness, Jack could run Iditarod. :-)
We use a buckle collar and use voice commands for corrections.

I have never used a harness but only collars so I have no experience as to which is better! Collars have worked fine for me.

For me different situations call for different types of tools :)
We just put a collar on Roxi now for tags.. but she can be completely off leash now. I put it on just around roads and heavily trafficed areas.
When she was a pup we got one of those special harnesses that hooked in the front because she pulled. It worked great because she learned that the harder she pulled she'd just go in circles lol. After she stopped we moved to a soft choker (I wont ever use chains) and she rarely tugged... now I could walk her on a finger lol.
Charlie.... uh... never got used to a leash... which was interesting the first time to watch him struggle and jumps around like a bronco. Silly 4 year old. Since he'll pull back and try to slip out so much I use the choker and he's gotten a lot better. Now we just need to teach him to sit before crossing the road and staying off the road until we say ok. He likes to chase cars :(

Really? a special harness that hooks in front... I'll have to look for one of those. Are they hard to find?
