Usually if you see no evidence of a tail at all, not even a nub, then the dog is docked. The show dock is done very high and usually only leaves one vertebrae. The farm-type dock usually leaves two or three vertebrae. A natural bob can be anywhere from a half-tail to just on vertebrae, but usually has some longer hairs at the tip. So if you don't need to trim hairs, it's probably a show-dock. :-)
Interestingly, the bobtail is a lethal dominant so you could never breed dogs with 100% bobs. If the dog has one copy of the bobtail gene, it will have a bobtail. But if it has two copies, the fetus never develops and the dog is never born (though there have been a few reports of deformed homozygous bobs that could not survive puppyhood; not sure how common this happens but I believe it's pretty rare).
So every bobtail carries one copy of the bob gene and one copy of the full-tail gene, and therefore every breeding has a chance to produce some tailed dogs.
Beth...that is interesting about the bobtail, I had no idea.
Katie would have a show dock then...I know she was shown and then retired and had 2 litters. Max...well, being a fluffy he was stricly pet quality but he must also have a show dock. See how much I don't know! I learn a lot on here.
All of mine have show docks except for 1 and then of coarse Sage has her complete tail. At least Livvy I can see her tail wag vigorously while the others I see their but wiggle but really have to look. If you check out my pics you can see several tails and they all have white tips at the ends. I have never seen a Corgi with a natural bob...I would like to though!
