ears

they are not dirty, not wet and she can hear. But loo has been shaking her head a lot lately. On the floor, on the couch and in bed. We have even trimmed some wiley hairs, thinking they were too long. She shakes two or three times and seems satisfied. Any ideas?

Aw, poor thing had an itch! You are right, that was probably the cause. Jack always gets a little bit of black gunk in one ear (not the other). The vet said to keep an eye on it but since it does not seem to bother him, to just keep it clean. I must say that I am not as diligent as I should be about the ear cleaning.

I dampen a paper towel with the ear cleaner and wrap it around my finger and wipe the inside of the ear, rather than squirt the stuff in. I tried squirting the stuff in once and they seem to hate it.

I have a feeling someone has messed with her ears before. She laid perfectly still while I tried to get in there. She's like me..when I went in to her ear with the q-tip, her leg started kicking like I was tickling her 'spot'. Hilarious. I will probably try the paper towel thing-I can see the wash actually ticking her off!

Stephanie--while it is ok to use the q-tip on the ear please be very careful and use it on the outside only--don't insert the q-tip inside the ear.

I agree with Steve, you must be very careful if using a qtips as you can go in too far or you can easily push the dirt in further. The best is still getting ear wash from your vet(not a store) and you do have to put a large amount in (I watched my vet and couldn't believe how much she used, she filled the whole ear area. Rub the ears well especially at the base and let them free to shake like a wild dog. This brings the dirt up and out. Then wipe in about 15 minutes with a paper towel or old soft rag to get the dirt out of the outer ear. This needs to be done several days in a row. Mine run when they see the bottle or a qtip. Also because the ear wash contains alcohol do not put in any ear that may have a sore. Good luck!

Hi Stephanie, we are currently dealing with a nasty ear infection with our border collie that also had the brown discharge. I was trying to clean it myself w/ ear wash (from the vet, but not prescription) twice a day. I think I waited too long to take him to the vet, thinking I could get it under control, and it got so bad that the fluid built up in his ear and caused him to be disoriented and dizzy. (We had to carry him where ever he needed to go because he could not stand up without falling over, and the poor guy would move his eyes from side to side, as if the room was spinning and he was trying to get his bearings.) Three months and about $800 later, and we are still treating him with antibiotics and prescription ear wash twice a day (on the fourth & fifth bottles of prescription wash) and will be for at least the next 3 weeks, at which time we will have to take him in so the vet can assess if we need to continue treatment. Long story short (too late!!), you should probably try ear wash from the vet ,but if she is still shaking her head after a couple of days of ear wash, you may want to take her to the vet to catch any infection soon enough to treat it.
