My corgi, Ein, has been pooping frequently today (5 times) and they're very small soft stools.  There have been no changes in his diet other than giving him a greenie for the first time last night. Has anyone had this kind of experience with the Greenies? Also, what other brands of dental chews can you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance!

My brother's fiancee used to work as a Vet tech and used to sneak Greenies to my mother's dog as a treat on occasion.  And we always knew when she did it because the poor thing would have an upset stomach for about 24 hours.  My friend's dog used to have the same thing happen.

If you're certain nothing else has changed in his diet, then I'd say it was the Greenie.  I avoid dental treats all together (personal preference, as most treats tend to lead to an upset stomach), but you might want to give bone a try.  I like to keep a piece of elk antler or two around the house to help with teeth cleaning and as an outlet for chewing.  I've read of others on here using beef knuckles, too.  I also brush my dogs' teeth every few days to make sure they stay clean.

Thanks for the input! I'll look into getting him some bones to chew on.

Hi Annamae, how about environment change? any new visitors? furniture addition? activity change?

Everythings the same, except, I forgot to mention that we just started dog training lessons this past Friday. We had the trainer come to our house and ever since then, I've been training him and using plain Cheerios for treats. It's what the trainer used when she came over. Ein only started to have loose and frequent stools today, so I'm assuming it's the greenies. I'm hoping the next couple of days he'll get better. If not, it could be something else? He has a vet appointment for next week so I hope he's fine by then.

I would avoid Greenies just because I've read one too many horror stories of them swelling up and causing a blockage in the throat or stomach.  If they cause a sad tummy, more reason to avoid it!  I've never given them myself (although Waffle did have 2 of the Nylabone brand Greenies things because my parents got them for him) so I can't comment on how it affected him.  The Nylabone ones caused no problem but they still made me nervous.  My favorite things to give to clean teeth are raw oxtail pieces and antlers.  I get my antlers from Peak Antler Company, though they are kind of expensive, so I haven't gotten a new one in a while.  If you know any hunters, ask for the antlers!  Just scrape the sharp points on the cement to wear them down and wash them in hot water with scrubbing and some light soap.  If you or they have a saw, 5-6 inch pieces seem to be best for Waffle.

I give Wyatt the "Get Naked Puppy Health Dental Chew" sticks. He loves them, they're all natural, low-calorie, are filled with DHA, and they've never given him loose stools. They also keep him occupied while I get ready for work! ;)

I use the Get Naked low calorie ones.  They have mint in them so they give them nice fresh breath.  Only 17 calories and they love them.  They make Jack go "Aaa-roooo!"    I am really happy with them and used to get them at PetSmart, but now I have to order them because I can't find them anywhere.  They are the green ones.

They also like Dentastix, but the big ones are 70 calories each so they get them rarely.

I was curious Beth, how often do you give Jack and Maddie the Get Naked dental chews? Right now I give one to Wyatt every other morning, after he's finished breakfast (and while I'm getting ready for work). I figure because the chews are so low calorie and nutritious one can get away with giving them to their pups more frequently. I don't want to spoil him too much with treats though, even if he is a growing pup.

They are expensive so I don't give them all that often, but I rotate through other treats. I'd say mine might get them on average twice a week or so.    But what you are giving should be just fine.

"Get Naked" is awesome. Sheldon sneezed quite a few times after I gave him Greenies so I switched over for good (thought he was allergic to Greenies).

Antlers are also amazing as well for his teeth, as well as tartar busters, which are basically cow knees.

Wyatt loves antlers as well. They're a million times better than bones, rawhides, or stinky nasty bully sticks. Wyatt keeps himself well occupied for hours with his antler. They also last forever!
