So yesterday, since it was such a nice day out (a rarity for us when it's the dead of winter in Vancouver), my fiance and I decided to take Rocky to the off leash park. He ran around for a good 45 minutes and after that, we went home. He was fine for the rest of the day until 2:30 am when he started barking.  Usually, Rocky's very good and doesn't bark at all during the night but he barked so loud that it even woke me up. He sounded desperate so I went downstairs to let him out. He pooped and then ran back in. I thought because he didn't poop after dinner last night, he decided he finally had to go at 2:30 am but this morning, at 8:00, he started barking again. Again, it sounded desperate so I ran down to let him out but he really couldn't hold it and he pooped all over his mattress in his crate. I still let him out after that and he went again and it was pure liquid.

Now, the only thing we did differently yesterday was that we went to the dog park and he managed to sneak a couple of licks of water in the community bowl provided by the park before I got the chance to pull him away so I'm guessing he may have picked up something from there? What can I give him to help him stay hydrated and ease off the diarrhea?

Some rice helps and soft chicken. I suggest you lay off normal kibble your a while until it eases. Napolean was once stuck in his bed for 3 days with diarrhea and a flu or something. By giving him rice and chicken or a little vegetables for his meals, his digestive system seemed to settle and he was fine after that. I hope Rocky gets better!

Just make sure he drinks water in order to stay hydrated. I've heard to completely back off food for 24 hours and then slowly introduce a bland diet back in but in small amounts. When Noodles has done this, I give him rice with chicken or rice with some egg in four small amounts throughout the day. I've kept him on that for 3-4 days if necessary. I haven't tried the backing off of food for 24 hours yet, but I have done the bland diet. Hope that helps. Keep looking at his gums to make sure they remain pink.

Hope he is doing better now. Rice and chicken work for everyone here. Be sure he gets  plenty of water. What Noodles and Alison say

Banana + applesauce = natural kayopectate works really well, it's what we use for babies in our peds unit.

Poor guy!  I'd fast him for 12 hours, then try just a tiny amount of food;  a tablespoon of kibble, or one plain biscuit if you have just plain ones.  If that doesn't upset him, you can give him a bit more later, then his normal ration tomorrow.  If he's still having problems, then the rice and chicken is good.  Usually when mine get into something it resolves on its own in a few hours, but if he continues to have liquid diarrhea for more than a day I'd touch base with your vet over the phone.  Good luck!

Thanks for all the wonderful tips guys! He seems to be better today... but he hasn't had a single bowel movement since early/mid- afternoon yesterday so now I'm worried he's constipated! LOL! It's one thing after another with him but you gotta love him! ;)

Probably just because everything he ate yesterday went right through him, so there was no food processed and therefore no waste generated.  Usually when a dog is constipated, they try to go and can't.  He should return to normal movements about 8 hours or so (not sure of exact timeline) after he had a meal that he kept down.  Maybe a little more or less depending on what he ate.

Other than skipping breakfast on Sunday morning (when the diarrhea was real bad), he's been eating. At first, it was just really soft rice but he's been back on his regular kibble since yesterday morning. I've seen him go outside and kind of half get into his pooping position but then he gets back up without doing anything. I talked to my vet yesterday and she said to try giving him a tablespoon of canned pumpkin with his meals to see if that will help move things along so he had some of it for dinner last night and breakfast this morning but nothing so far. I'm worried he's got some sort of obstruction in his intestines now :(

As Beth said it may take a day. Canned pumpkin works great for  diahhrea and constipation. I would just moniter till Thur. am and make sure he isn't just pooping a little bit. Does sound like he is trying but maybe the food hasn't reached the point to be eliminated yet.You could call and ask the vet just to be safe!
