Fixil got sprayed full in the face. He also got some in his eye. We irrigated his eye and soaped out his fur the best we could. Any suggestions? Should I be worried about his eye? He still smells terrible. (Well so do I, he shook out on me when I was washing him.) And it smells nothing like a normal skunk smell. Could it be a different animal? His face was all oily.

Maybe contact the vet and see if you can get him checked out?

I'd call and ask the vet about his eye but I'm thinking if he's keeping it open it should be ok Matbe want to ask the vet if there's any other animal that sprays too. I use peroxide and lemon dish soap for my dogs. but we haven't had to do this for years!  Good luck!

Hi Morgan, so sorry to hear about the incident, mix 1 quart (.95 liters) of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, a quarter cup (59 milliliters) of baking soda and one teaspoon (5 milliliters) of liquid non scented detergent and lather him up. After five minutes, rinse off your pup and he should be as good as new.

On it! Thanks! And he is not squinting his eye anymore but I am going to keep monitoring him.

This recipe works great, it is what we always use on Frosty during his at least twice a year skunk fiascos lol

When I worked at the vets, we used Masengil Douche to get rid of skunk smell on dogs that came in. It worked better than 'Skunk Off' which was made for that job. I would probably have his eye checked out just in case. Eyes are something you don't want to mess with and a full round of skunk in the eye could irritate it enough he needs some meds for it to prevent ulceration.

Others have given you good advice on de-skunking, but I just wanted to comment on the smell.   When you normally smell skunk, it hasn't sprayed; it's just the skunk musky odor.  When they spray, it's overwhelming and does smell different from normal skunk smell because it's so strong.  If a skunk sprays in your backyard (happened twice to me, once when I was still a teen at my parents', and once here) the smell is terrifically awful.   I have done the mad dash to close all the windows only to have the smell linger for a day or two inside the house.  It makes your eyes water and your throat burn.

So chances are it's skunk!   Just watch; chances are Fixil has not learned his lesson and will go right up to another skunk if he gets a chance.

I agree with Beth about the smell for sure.  I kinda of like the smell of side-of-the-road skunk that you pass while driving in your car sometimes.  However, in your face fresh skunk sprays smells NOTHING like that and also immediately sets me off on an asthma attack (which totally sucks because I am the one who always has to wash Frosty while not being able to breath lol!!)
