Torri is 21 months old and weighs 31 pounds. She gets plenty of exercise, and I'm substituting peas and carrots for some of the dry food (she hates green beans), and would like to get her to 28 or 29 pounds by the end of summer.
Brody is 4 and around 32# this last winter he was a little below 30# and his ribs were sticking out so he is at his healthiest at 32 - 33#. Lilly is quite a bit smaller and stays around 20#.
Silly question..... but doesn't the amount of muscle figure in to the size and weight. Our Chepstow is 35 pounds and most would say that is heavy because he is not a large corgi. He walks 2 miles every day, runs a total of a quarter mile (not at the same time) and swims in deep water for a total of an hour every day. He is healthy and full of muscles (a real hard body). They say muscle weighs more than fat........is this true of dogs?
Ours haven't been weighed since December, but then Lucky was thin at 32# and Sonny was chunky at 40#. Sonny is definately of stockier build than Lucky. We have been cutting back on Sonny's food, and he has been gaining weight! He looks FAT, we call him TW or too wide. He is constantly begging and I caught him stealing the weeds from the piles on the lawn and eating the lettuce from the planters on the porch, maybe this corgi has an eating disorder!
my guy, Gunny, is 30lbs(about 14 Kg)...He is also 6 years old. He just had surgery yesterday to repair his back rear knee. I think his weight contributed to this, despite my vet saying probably not. Still I think he would be better off a few pounds thinner. I have been feeding him low fat dry ( Innova Dry) about a cup a day but am cutting down to 1/2 cup of the dry moistened slightly (a heaping tsp) with canned California Natural Chicken & Brown Rice) Maybe a 1/4 C in the morning and another 1/4 C. in the evening.. He refuses to eat it just dry. He gained weight over the winter since we do not walk as regularly. Combine the weight along with his loving to run tight circles and you end up with a torn ACL I guess!
Mine all weigh between 17 (Maddie the mini) and 25 (the regular sized ones). Moira weighed in at 48 lbs when I got her from a shelter (who called me to take her because they knew I had corgis and would know how to help her slim down). She's now 24 lbs.
Vets often comment on how they seem slim, but they readily admit they're not used to seeing corgis that weight what they should.
how did you slim her down? I think I read that males average up to 30 lbs and Cardigan males can be as high as 38lbs. Does that sound correct to anyone? I do not show my boy, but is there a standard weight for showing Pembrokes?
Here is what the breed standard says for Pembrokes on the PWCCA:
Size, Proportion, Substance-Height (from ground to highest point on withers) should be 10 to 12 inches. Weight is in proportion to size, not exceeding 30 pounds for dogs and 28 pounds for bitches. In show condition, the preferred medium-sized dog of correct bone and substance will weigh approximately 27 pounds, with bitches approximately 25 pounds. Obvious oversized specimens and diminutive toylike individuals must be very severely penalized.
Proportions-Moderately long and low. The distance from the withers to the base of the tail should be approximately 40 percent greater than the distance from the withers to the ground.
Substance-Should not be so low and heavy-boned as to appear coarse or overdone, nor so lightboned as to appear racy.
I have a Cardi male myself, and he is super slim at 37 lbs, but he is a really big boy (top of the standard for size).
With Moira, we cut her food intake, moved her to a more nutritious food, as well as increased her activity. It took close to 10 mos. to get Moira under 30 lbs. Because of the weight, she has issues with her back and hips, as well as the joints in her knees. I work to keep all of the corgis at optimum weight, adjusting their food intake as necessary. Our little cardi puppy weighs in at only 22 lbs. @ 11 mos. Tank, the cardi x is good at 34 lbs. He had gotten up to 45 lbs. and it was miserable for him.
Most folks just take a drinking cup and dump food without actually measuring it. (At least that's what I've found with the clients I have in dog training classes.) When they're show exactly how much 1 cup is, they're shocked. Maddie, the smallest, gets 1 to 1 1/4 cups per day. Moira, Dundee and Harmony get 1 1/2 to 1 2/3 cups per day. Tank is at 2 cups per day. The catahoulas, who weigh in at 40 lbs average, get close to 4 cups.
The dogs are sleek, but not slim. I keep them lean. I see too many dogs in my job that are stupidly overweight and owners who are in denial.
Neeka is probably 25-26 pounds, she is three years old. She was overweight a bit (probably 29-30 pounds) until i started on raw, I didn't think she was until she started losing weight and now I always get compliments on hot fit/healthy she looks.
Ella is 2 yrs old and is just shy of 22 lbs. A simple way to tell if your corgi is at a healthy weight is to feel their ribs. You should be able to distinguish ribs but not slip in between them. On the opposite end, if you have a hard time telling separate ribs apart your corgi is probably over weight. This is just a general guide line though. Each corgi is built differently.
