How picky are you about dog germs?
I grew up in a family that put the plates on the floor for the dogs to "clean" before they were washed- no garbage disposal needed! My husband is squeamish about a people spoon being used to scoop dog food, even though the dog never touches the spoon. Anything that is used for the dogs and might get confused with human stuff is given a shot of bright yellow spray paint. LOL. Where are you in dog germ spectrum?

No one tell my friends please, but my dogs like to do the pre-rinse when I put the dishes in the dishwasher, especially Kota. She stands on the door so she can get to the dishes. I try to stop her, but a few seconds later, she's right back up there. They also sometimes sleep with us, which means on our pillows, so I guess I can't be too concerned with germs. I don't typically share people food with them, but once Kota did get into a bowl of something I left unattended. I really wanted it, so I just shrugged it off and finished eating it.

Yea Sandy I can see them sleeping with me and they do that, but licking the dishes...I will have to get back with you on that. And I will not tell anyone.

My dogs wait patiently for dinner to be over with. Then as soon as somebody makes a move to get up, they are underfoot immediately, just waiting for those plates and serving bowls to be placed on the ground. My daughter always brings up the Girl Scout Skit Spic and Span when she sees this.
Why else do we own dogs if not to clean the plates and crumbs off the floor(if they even hit the floor)?

I haven't heard the Spic and Span one but a friend of mine has told me one about Soap and Water. I got this off a boys scout site:
Scout 1 comes in and says, "Yum! What's cooking?"
Chef Scout says, "Scout Stew. Want some?"
Scout 1 "Sure! I'll have some."
Chef Scout hands him a plate from basin.
Scout 1 looks at plate suspiciously. "Is this plate clean?"
Chef Scout responds cheerfully, "As clean as Soap and Water can make it!"
Fake spoons some stew onto plate.
Scout 1 sits down, shakes head and starts fake eating.
Scout 2 comes in and says, "What's for dinner?"
Chef Scout says, "Scout Stew."
Scout 2 says, "I'll have some, please."
Chef Scout hands him a plate from basin
Scout 2, looks at plate, sniffs it. "How did you wash this plate?"
Chef Scout responds cheerfully, "I used Soap and Water!"
Fake spoons some stew onto plate
Scout 2 sits down shrugs shoulders and starts fake eating.
Repeat for Scouts 3-4, or as many as needed, Coming in singly or together.
Q "Are these plates clean?"
A "As clean as Soap and Water can make them!"
Finally all the scouts finish eating, thank the Chef, and put their plates in stack near pot.
Chef Scout gathers all the plates into the wash basin, turns to right.
Puts plates on ground and calls, "Here Soap! Here Water!"
Scouts finished eating look in shock as...
Two last "scouts" come on hands and knees acting like dogs and happily lick the plates "clean"
for Chef Scout to put back into wash basin.
And now, when Teddy gets to lick a plate, we say something about "as clean as soap and water can make it."

That's the one, we just used the brand name detergent (Spic and Span) Should have received some revenue for our troop.

From what I can remember (over 12 years ago), It involved 2 dogs named Spic and span, and how the dishes were really cleaned behind the scenes in the cafeteria.

I cant bear it when dogs are allowed to lick plates, my friend has 3 dogs and can no longer lay out food on her low table or the dogs will test everything. She also allows the dogs to lick her cups as well. If Archie is going to have leftovers, they always get put in his bowl and he has never yet attempted to lick any of my plates or bowls. He also has seperate forks for dishing up his food. I am not a clean freak I just dont like it! x

I guess I'm in the minority, but my dogs don't even think of getting to lick a plate or go near the dishwasher. It's not about germs, a good washing takes care of that, it's just something that I personally don't like. What one person feels comfortable with, another does not. I was at someone's house for dinner one night and we had whole roasted chickens. At he end of the meal they gathered all the bones left on everyone's plates ( 7 people ) saying " these will make great soup!" My stomach turned.... and I could not hide my distaste for that idea. They were surprised at my reaction and remarked that there would be no germs as the broth would boil for a long time. True enough, but I will think twice about ordering soup at a restaurant in the future. Different strokes for different folks.

Maybe your dogs have germs. Mine don't. Maybe that's why their poop don't stink.
