We recently started brushing Beni's teeth every day in an effort to try and reduce some of the huge buildups of plaque on his teeth and prevent his having a dental cleaning. Our vet suggested we try brushing every day for 6 months and seeing if there is improvement. His teeth do look a lot better after the brushing, but I'm wondering whether there is some long term consequence of giving him that much toothpaste. We use about 4 pea sized dabs each time.

Anyone have any knowledge of how that stuff works and what the side effects are? We use Petrodex, poultry flavor.

Thanks in advance!

I don't see the harm in it since u r using toothpaste made for dogs. I have brushed teddys teeth everyday since he was 9monhs old and never had a problem

Try giving a raw bone from the butchers once or twice a week for a bit. I can almost promise you that you will see major results. Our boys have spotless teeth. It keeps them occupied  for a good hour or so (sometimes way longer) and cleans off the built up plaque in no time :) One bone chewing will do so much more than brushing :)

If you have any questions about it just ask :)

what kind of bones do you give? A knuckle bone or ? I'm thinking of giving Franklin raw bones every once in a while to help keep his teeth clean.
I like to give oxtail to my dog.  Those are his favorite bones.  Pork femurs are good bones for his teeth too.

We use beef knuckle bones for the most part but will use elk femur, cow feumurs, marrow bones, etc. The beef knuckle bones we get are wonderful. They usually get through the bones in about 2 hours, bone and all! :)

The marrow ones we keep and reuse with frozen peanut butter inside them every once in a while :)

What kind of bone and isn't raw not good for them? Especially if the are herders and get the taste of blood?

Raw bones are fine. I've never heard of anyone having problems with a dog "getting the taste of blood"...there are plenty of very serious herding people who feed their dogs totally raw. I don't think a dog is going to suddenly turn on you because you gave him a bone lol.

These are very similar to what I get at the deli:

Cool beans, thanks for the reassurance, I guess it's an old wives tale.  I am not concerned about him turning on me,but that guy has some jaws on him--the cat better run!
yeah he isn't going to associate a piece of bone you give him to your cat. If he were to attack and eat your cat, I think that is more "the taste of blood" you have to worry about. Its more a live animal that has been killed vs a inanimate object that has no relation to them to a living creature. The only thing to be careful about with raw is bacteria so don't give it to them and let them drag it all over your carpet then run and lick your face, etc.Treat it like you would any raw chicken breast or steak.
Sorry, but I was just kidding about the cat. To tell the truth I had an Aussie that mauled our goat to death, then at a later date killed a ram lamb right after the ewe gave birth. There was also the neighbor's dog; every time he got loose it would come over and slaughter chickens. It was pretty gross, the d*&mn thing would just run through the flock grabbing and shaking, then moving on.
those are the ones I usually buy too. The butcher was out today, so I got sliced knuckles instead. Chester is gnawing away (he's LOUD!) and Sid is just guarding his. Saving it for later, I guess! Brucey didn't want one; he's so old now I think it's too much work for him. He'd rather have diced chicken :)
what do you ask for? "Marrow bones?"
