We recently started brushing Beni's teeth every day in an effort to try and reduce some of the huge buildups of plaque on his teeth and prevent his having a dental cleaning. Our vet suggested we try brushing every day for 6 months and seeing if there is improvement. His teeth do look a lot better after the brushing, but I'm wondering whether there is some long term consequence of giving him that much toothpaste. We use about 4 pea sized dabs each time.
Anyone have any knowledge of how that stuff works and what the side effects are? We use Petrodex, poultry flavor.
Thanks in advance!

Try giving a raw bone from the butchers once or twice a week for a bit. I can almost promise you that you will see major results. Our boys have spotless teeth. It keeps them occupied for a good hour or so (sometimes way longer) and cleans off the built up plaque in no time :) One bone chewing will do so much more than brushing :)
If you have any questions about it just ask :)
We use beef knuckle bones for the most part but will use elk femur, cow feumurs, marrow bones, etc. The beef knuckle bones we get are wonderful. They usually get through the bones in about 2 hours, bone and all! :)
The marrow ones we keep and reuse with frozen peanut butter inside them every once in a while :)
Raw bones are fine. I've never heard of anyone having problems with a dog "getting the taste of blood"...there are plenty of very serious herding people who feed their dogs totally raw. I don't think a dog is going to suddenly turn on you because you gave him a bone lol.
These are very similar to what I get at the deli:
