Sorry about the rapid fire questions but I only discovered this site not that long ago, and I am a relatively new Corgi and dog owner.

Our Corgi just turned 4 months and the potty training is still not great -- he is finally going on command once I take him outside but if I don't take him out when he needs to go, he will eliminate in the house (1 or 2).

I am still taking him out about every 35-45 minutes which varies depending on when he has eaten or how much he has drank recently. I basically still have to watch him like a hawk.

I am trying to teach him to bark at the stairs to let me know he needs to go out, which he has done successfully a few times but I am wondering if we are behind in the potty training and missing something or if we just need to keep on it.

Thanks.

Check out the FAQ on the top of the site for all your questions regarding housetraining. If your pup is eliminating in the house, it's down to our (human) mistakes. Usually, it's too much freedom given to the dog, too soon. At 4 months, you can hardly expect him to be perfect. Set him up for success! :-)

Your right usually when he does "eliminate" its due to me not checking the time. Or when he gets done with a big playtime. Luckily he is making a lot of progress, I just wonder when he will begin to let me know he needs to be let out and know he is not allowed to go inside the house. I guess time and practice?

Hi Nicole, it's in the FAQ. If you incorporate bell training, it may work out better than barking, all the answers are in the FAQ :)

He's still very young, I wouldn't worry about it too much if he's still having a few accidents. As Ludi said accidents are usually the result of too much freedom too soon. When they're puppies it's really more about prevention until they figure it out. I will say that not all dogs will give a signal that they need to go out though, even as adults. I'd just keep him on a schedule.

It's really best to do it while there younger. My vet said 6months is around the perfect time. There behavior is a lot better when they get fixed so it's a lot easier to train them.

That is good to know, I was more worried we had set him to go in the house forever! I will just keep on the schedule. : )
