Mowgli was on Prednisone for a month as part of the heart-worm treatment,. During that time I took him out to relieve himself every 2 hrs (except at night) He stopped the medication 3 wks ago and still needs to relieve himself every 3 hrs or so. By now I would have expected the effect to have worn off... can anyone shed some light on how long it will take for him to return to normal? He's had several accidents in the house, whereas he had none in the year and a half we'd had him before and I know it was just because he could not hold it. He is not drinking much, so that is not a factor.

I'm assuming they did a proper taper at the end and did not stop him cold turkey?
Prednisone has a short half-life but I think it can take the body a little while to realize it has to regulate its own levels once again and so systems can get screwed up. It's also possible he has to retrain his bladder to hold it if he was going out every few hours while on it.
Prednisone tamps down the immune system, does it not? Might he have picked up a UTI because of that? I think it's worth taking a urine sample to the vet.
Did they do a blood panel when he was done to make sure his kidney function is ok?
Sorry can't help but I do know that prednisone a strong med but also a very effective med. Hopefully it will get better soon!
I have the same questions as Beth, did they taper the medication? Also I would wonder about a UTI. Sometimes pred can cause Cushing's disease and that might be worth looking into. By now I would assume the medication would be completely out of his system so I would call your vet and see what they advise. A blood panel to check for diabetes, cushings, and/or kidney function or a UTI might be in order.
Mowgli was on 5 mgs. Prednisone for 2 wks. then 5 mgs. every other day for 2 wks. Then we stopped. I have an appointment tomorrow with the Vet for the final heartworm check and will ask about this, but wanted some feedback before going in. I don't think he has a UTI, when I take him out he has a large amount of urine, enough that he legitimately needs to go. I appreciate the answers.
Please keep us posted
Went for the final heart-worm check today, which was negative. As for the frequent urination, the Vet was not concerned as all Mowgli's signs were excellent. He said dogs have been drinking more because of the low humidity we've been having ( around 19%) and that may be a factor. Anyhow, I'm so happy to put this heart-worm issue in our past :-) the rest I can deal with, if I know it's nothing to worry about.
UPDATE: It took three months for this side-effect to slowly go away. He would loose urine anytime he got excited. I had to put him on a short leash and tie him up while I prepared the food bowls and make sure I sent him outside before anything exciting took place ( like someone coming over). He is back to normal now, as well as cured. What a relief! These medicines can affect the body long after what they tell you.....it was not a training problem and I never scolded him. I just want people to know in case someone else should have a similar experience after steroid treatment.
Glad to hear this...I also believe that animals and people "train their bladders" so once they get used to going more often it's probably hard to reverse without some time.
