My 9 week old pup peed on newspaper but poos beside the newspaper. Today this alternated: poo on newspaper and pee BESIDE newspaper again.

Anybody know why he's doing this? I mean, he knows the newspaper is where to eliminate, but he's not following the rules all the time. Very strange how he alternates too.

Hi Ada, read and re-read the FAQ on potty train + common mistakes. Your problem is not being consistent, puppy pads / newspaper / outside = too many option, choose one (outside) and stick with one only, do it right the first time and you won't need to re-train him mid way. Again, read and re-read the FAQ. Good luck!
Thanks Sam, I'll go read it right away! We gave the option of going outside for most of the time until we realized that he wasn't listening to us much when he's got the whole backyard to himself to roam around.

If possible I'd skip the newspaper all together and just take him outside. It's a pain in the butt for a while but it will make the whole process a lot easier in the long run. He's also very young. Some dogs aren't fully potty trained until they're a year so expecting him to be 100% at 9 weeks isn't really realistic.

We want to housetrain him first because we did try taking him to the yard, but we couldn't control him.
What do you mean you couldn't control him? Don't you have a leash?
Hi Jane, if I'm not mistaken, Ada meant she couldn't make her pup go potty on command. Ada does have a leash and she may not think it would help the situation. We were all once newbie dog owners, no one was born with this knowledge, it can be very frustrating, I wished someone would point me to the right direction, it would have saved me a lot of time and money.

Gee so sorry, next time I'll just tell them to read the FAQ and save myself the time.

Hi Sam, I've taken away the newspaper and only used the puppy pads now and he's actually peeing more on there now. Poo is still a problem though.

When outdoors, it's not a problem with bosco to eliminate at all because we have a leash on him and we just stand at one spot (no playing) and he'll eventually eliminate because he's got nothing else he could do. After he has eliminated, we would take off the collar and leash and let him roam around the backyard a bit. Then we'll head back inside.
Yup, we got a leash and we keep it on him until he pee/poo outside. However, we want him to know where it is okay to pee/poo if we are not there to supervise him.
Even though you have a fenced in yard, you will need to take him out in the yard on leash to potty train your pup. It will make it easier in the long run.
We do use a leash to train him to potty outside, and it is going well now. After potty, we let him off the leash and collar to allow some playtime.
It really does work to spend the first few months (yes, months) taking your pup out on a leash to do their business. They have to be complimented immediately in order to begin to understand that you really are happy when they "go "outside. I also like to use that time to teach a command for potty. Say the command as soon as they squat. Later you will be glad you took the time. Remember at 9weeks your puppy is a baby and probably doesn't understand everything, doesn't have much of an attention span, and still can not control its bladder. Humans take years to get this but a dog will be pretty reliable by 6 months (although not 100%) Hang in there I always say that as soon as I think they will never get it, they are suddenly trained.
