I was wondering if feeding 1 raw egg yolk daily to one's dog was safe.  Is it too frequent?  And should the yolk be cooked?

I would think that every day may be too frequent but I do feed mine the whole raw egg 2-3 times per week and they love it!
Yolk is fine, egg white not so much, too much of it can cause biotin deficiency (skin inflammation and loss of hair)
@ Sam...so how much is too much for egg whites? I never knew this! Thanks!
Sorry Jane, I should have clarified: uncooked egg white contain avidin, a protein that interferes with the absorption of biotin, that's what caused the deficiency. You can either cook the egg white (that changes the character of avidin) or just feed the yolk.

To get the shiny healthy coat, 0.5mg/ 10kg (22 lbs) biotin per day is enough.
If you are feeding ONLY egg whites, then yes, the avidin can cause a biotin defiency. However, to my understanding the egg yolk contains a large amount of biotin which counteracts the avidin in the white. My dogs get raw eggs, shell and all, once or twice a week. Then again, they get a lot of raw stuff most dogs don't get.... Never seen their skin and fur look better either. :)
It takes 5.7 grams of biotin to neutralize all the avidin found in the raw whites of an average-sized egg. The problem is there are only 25 millionths of a gram of biotin in an average egg yolk. Archana Sharma Ph.d. a research scientist studied it and convinced long time raw egg advocate - Dr Joseph Mercola to retract his recommendation last year. Also read scientific journals here and here.

Bottom line is: Always get your information straight from credible peer reviewed journals or veterinary textbook.
We give our dogs raw eggs (including shells) 2-3 times a week. Any more than that and we know we are looking for diarrhea. They do really well with it, except Mickey the princess spits his shells out. It makes their fur great and they seem really happy to get the eggs in general.
I cook Eddy a scrambled egg once a week or so.
what is the advantage of the egg shell? i do the scrambled egg once a week or so but never heard of giving the egg raw and with the shell. sounds a lot easier!
I think folks want to get that extra calcium carbonate. If you're already feeding a good kibble or a balanced raw diet, you don't really need it. Read here for caution and shell feeding guidline.
