Hey everyone!
Haven't been on in awhile, and now I am in need of some advice!

My little guy just turned 2 in February.  And since November, he's having seizures about once a month.  No one in his family, that i know of, are having seizures.  I feed him Blue Buffalo, but the vet says food has nothing to do with it.  We got a kitten back in October, nope, it's not the cat either they say.

The only thing that they say might be it is him falling off our back porch when he was 8 months, and it was a good 10-12foot drop.  And around 2 years is when they start developing epilepsy.

Has anyone else dealt with this?  One vet says to hold on on giving him medication, and the other says they recommend it! Phenobob is what they're going to put him on.

Please help!
Thanks!

We had a cat, lived to ripe old age with occasional spectacular grand mal seizures, probably more stressful to us than to him. In our case, the vet said leave it alone if it didn't get worse, which it didn't.
Phenobarbitol is a pretty heavy-duty drug, I'd think, to be avoided if possible.
Our Standard Poodle lived to the ripe old age of 18 with epilepsy. He had seizures about once a month and we chose not to medicate. Our vet only recommends meds for more frequent ones. There were years when the seizures were less often, it varied over the course of his life. It never seemed to bother him. I am sorry your pup has this but he can still live a long happy life.
I've had two dogs with seizures. One a German Shepherd/Husky mix, and my Newfoundland. They both started at around two years of age. The Husky had a fall to the floor when she was a puppy, and my Newfoundland was hit by a car with head trauma before I got him. The Husky "cluster seized" her whole life--approximately every 1-2 months she would seize for days at a time, usually not back to back, but 2-3 a day. She spent many days at the vet anesthesized with pentobarbitol to get them stopped. She took Phenobarbitol and Potassium Bromide, but was never greatly controlled. She lived to be 12.
My Newfoundland was different though. He took Phenobarbitol and did fairly well unless he was stressed (going to the groomer), but one day seized uncontrollably all day (I worked nights and found him when I got up). He spent a day at the vet where he then sent him to the State Vet school in Ames. He spent a week there trying to get under control. It was sad. When we picked him up he didn't recognize any of us--he had amnesia. Whether he ever got his memory back or just loved us all over again, who knows? But in about two weeks, he was "back to normal". They added Potassium Bromide to his medicines too, and he never seized again. He lived to be 13, and just died two weeks ago. :-(

So, every dog is different--and it's scary to witness as an owner, but it can be dealt with, and they can live a fairly normal life with the meds....good luck!
A best friend of mine had a dog with epilepsy. The dog was not on any medication and lived a full and wonderful life. In the end it was a seizure related accident send her over the rainbow bridge. Just make sure to keep your little one away from the swimming pool...
